Hello.

 

Just an entry to blog my progress on things really, nothing special....

 

I have been slowly working along the fiddleyard, to date I have track laid on one of the semi-circular end boards and I have now started on the rear board...

The above picture shows the beginnings of the bit that the cassette slots into, just to the right of the cassette I have removed the cork and added a piece of plywood. As the Aluminium angle is going to be screwed to the boards here I wanted something a little firmer than cork to put the woodscrews through. BTW the cassettes are the same as the Oxford 2mm Groups so that way I can 'borrow' some when I need them!

This photo shows an overall of the board, there is still plenty to do on this board but I have made a start today!

 

Finally more Narrow Gauge Stuff, this time more V Tipper wagons! I have now run out of etches so if I would like anymore its going to cost me again! I have also made the descision this week to change to 4mm Gauge instead of 6.5mm. That way I should be able to make some decent NG steam engines without them looking all out of proportion.

No doubt you are intending to fit inside valve gear on the locos! Seriously I just cannot imagine trying to fit even the worm wheel into a 3mil gap (allowing for the back to back being about 3.2mm) That is assuming outside frames. Still no doubt someone has done it (Mr Walkley perhaps?) and if anyone can you are most likely to be the one.

Good to see Highclere is not forgotten.

Excellent stuff.. how small a narrow gauge locomotive are you thinking of... a tiny quarry hunslet would be an attractive little thing...or maybe a loco more Vale of Rheidol-ish to keep it:

 

-Largely square and box-shaped for ease of motorisation...

-Great Western in character!

Looking at prototypes for 6mm (=3ft) gauge, I see Southwold and various Manx railways, or early Ravenglass & Eskdale.

 

For 4mm (=2ft) gauge, there's a more interesting variety:- Lynton & Barnstaple, Vale of Rheidol, Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland, Talyllyn, Corris to name the more obvious ones.

 

There's also a few intermediate size (2'4" or 2'6") - Welshpool and Llanfair, Leek and Manifold, Glyn Valley.

 

Starting with your preference for things Great Western, adding the attraction of ripping up and relaying all that track, and finishing with the technical challenge mentioned by Don above, it's clear why you are moving to 4mm :)

 

When you get bored with this challenge, the next one is to replicate Ravenglass and Eskdale and move from 6mm (3') to 2.5mm (15") :)

A quarry hunslet would be pretty small in 2mm but is there a motor small enough?

Hello Don. I have worked out I can go down to 2.5mm inside the frames for the gearing so it should work! or at least according to my CAD drawings it should. The plan is to do one or two NG Steam engines and it just wouldnt have worked using 6.5mm gauge track. Highclere is not forgotten, far from it really...

Hello Will. Yes, those sound appealing! I have no real preference right now although it would be nice to tackle a garrett sometime but I think that would be a little too ambitious right now!

Hello David. I dont get bored of things really, Highclere is a good example. Look how long that is taking and I am still working on it now!

Good point Don. I do have some 4mm diamter motors but I think they would be next to useless for powering an engine. Nigel Lawtons motors are what I plan on using for this stuff, after all I have one in the diesel and it works fine.
