Etching to get something done....

Hello.

Well as the title says I have been busy trying to resurrect my modelling mogo and I have found the solution at the moment with etching stuff. For years I had a mental barrier regarding etching and how to draw things for etching. This fortunately has recently been lifted with the help of talking to others and trying out various things in Acad and the first results have arrived back from the etchers today.

I was racking my brains as to something which I could use as a trial to see if my theory about etching worked and it came in the form of a Nn3 V tipper wagon. The first 'prototype' chassis was drawn up and passed onto Pixie of RMWeb and 2mm fame who helped me out and came back a few weeks later. This to my surprise worked out fine and went together fine so my attention then turned to tweaking the first design (to make the chassis a little smaller) and then onto designing a V tipper to fit the chassis. This time I decided to go it alone and I then fitted several chassis and tipper bodies onto a sheet which was then sent off to the etchers. As I mentioned above these came back today...

I couldnt resist putting one together, if anything to see if the wagon actually worked so with the help of Andy H (again of RMWeb and 2mm fame) one was soldered together, the results are shown below alongside my NN3 diesel for scale...

It works! This is quite a milestone for me as its something I wanted to figure out for ages and was cause for a little mini celebration! Along with the wagon I had a little bit of room left on the sheet so I added a little gearbox which I have been working on for a future project...

If this fits together well it should give me a final gear ratio of 138:1 and should easily be adaptable to fit several engines.

There is loads more I am working on, hopefully each time tweaking my etching skills......As the saying goes, watch this space....

Shiney! :)

I'm interested in that gearbox you've done there Julia - what gears and motor does it use? I'm guessing there some of the smaller module gears from Mikro Antribe? Reminds me, if you've still got the link to the meshing centres calculations that we talked about en route to Peterborough I'd really appreciate it.

See you tomorrow!

Glad to see the mojo is back Missy and that gearbox dim question I know but is the motor going to be vertically mounted? Great to see the Nn3 lok again.. really must get started on mine.

Nice photos Julia!

Thank you for the chance to help build the first of your wagon etches - if only all kits were as simple and well-thought out as that one! ;) I'm really looking forward to seeing the gearbox assembled - that could be very very useful....... :D

Hello.

Thanks for the positive comments folks, they are much appreciated. Especially as I am trying to get my 'mojo' back.

Yes, see you tomorrow Pixie. I thought that gearbox would interest you. As you correctly said it is designed to use some o.2 MOD gears from Mikro Antribe along with one of those new motors the 2mmSA are selling. I have all the bits to make a couple up so I should be able to post some more info on them soon but I will bring one along with me to Warley anyway. The meshing centre calcs are on a post I did for the Showcase somewhere if you care to find it, you can easily use the formulae to suit something else.

Finally 1000+ comments on my blog! That is amazing and something I never thought would happen when I first started this. I think this is an ideal oppertunity to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me throughout the good and bad times....

Seriously good modelling again Missy. The gearbox looks interesting. Will you be using split axles or have you someother trick up your sleeve.

Hi Tom, hope to see some modelling from yourself in the near future?

I have designed the gearbox so the motor fits horizontally, not vertically. That way it should be easier to fit into an engine.

Hello Don.

Nah! It will hopefully use the same split axle stuff the 2mmSA use. If it will work or not Im not sure right now, I cannot see why not but time will tell! I need to get my head around how to use the wheel axle to locate the gearbox and yet to electrically isolate it from the axle too, no doubt it will involve some kind of PCB.

An insulating bearing perhaps nylon or teflon with a phospher bronze insert and the gearwheel on a m.ff could insulate the gearbox. Alternatively a fully insulated split axle so that the exterior of the axle is electrically dead and pick up off the other axles only.

Bit fiddly in 2mm but within your capabilities I think.

Julia as always you set the standard . and you getting your mojo back has shamed my mojo to come out of hiding from under my layout the 1P will recomence and track laying at grajndbrough must gt done

Hello Don.

Thank you, there are a few things to think about there, I like the idea of a plastic bush mounted on the gearbox itself as that would mean I wouldnt have to make things too complicated by modifying the wheels. IF I can make this as generic as possible it will be useful for future projects.and things. Keep the ideas comming though...

It about time you posted some more stuff Nigel! I am looking forward to seeing some results from your mojo returning....

Hi Julia :-) Great modeling as usual, but am particularly impressed that you broke a mental barrier. That can be one of the hardest things to do, I think.

Oh, and despite all this fancyful non-GWR work you're into, I'm glad to see you made a Freudian slip and wrote "mogo" instead of "mojo". Makes a GWR person like me feel right at home ;-)

Enough now - let the rest of us try to merely walk in your shadow rather than having to run to keep up!!! Stunning work.

Hello Mikkel, its good to see you are still around. Hope your amazing modelling it going to grace RMWeb again soon?

Its interesting how its worked out, for years now etching has been out of my reach because I couldnt figure out exactly how to do it and so I didnt really bother. Looking back now it surprises me how easily it seems to me now. Its like a switch has been thrown.

As for the GWR stuff, dont worry I havent forgotten my roots!

Whoa! Steady on there! Thank you for the compliment but there isnt anything that you couldnt do, trust me. Anyway your stuff is very impressive Kevin.

P.S. Keep a look out for the next issue of MRJ...
