Populating the Old Midland

Greetings to anyone still out there.

I have to confess to being a tad lazy in moving the Glenfield model on. Thoughts of vegetation has not exactly filled me with excitement, and other mini projects, such as a signal, has been tried and consigned to the bin to be tacked again.

So it's not that I've been doing nowt, its more that the bits of tweaking have not warranted an entry really.

For example, I've rearranged the buildings in the goods yard slightly and added some fencing.

Today I thought I would get some of my little folk and blutack them onto the layout to see if it made it come to life.

I am not a great fan of overpopulating layouts, cramming things in makes it look unrealistic to my eye.

Certainly the passenger figures for Glenfield have never justified having more than a couple of passengers on the platform, unless its an excursion.

Similarly, my first thought was to position 2/3 carts and wagons, but they were quickly removed again. Too busy!

I doubt I'll use more than a few items on this layout in total, because it needs to look like a sleepy village somewhere.

Here are a couple of pictures of not great depth of field, to give an idea of where I 'm going with the population issue.

I've just noticed the level crossing gates - still not repaired and now lifted slightly . Tut tut.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris, lovely stuff! I agree very much on the risk of overpopulating layouts, especially rural stations as you say.The horse-drawn by the crossing gates is particularly well placed, I think.

Thanks Mikkel, your comments are always highly valued as you know.

Yes, the carriage by the gates, perhaps having just dropped off Lady Muxloe of Bagwell Hall and her manservant, works well. I hadn't realised that until I was looking through the pictures later on!

I think some of my Edwardian figures might be a little OTT for this layout though!!!

More DH Lawrence than LP Hartley needed, perhaps?!

:)

Hi Chris, I'd somehow managed to miss this until now, but just been reading back through your blog and the 'Little Midland' thread- The L&S and Glenfield has long been a source of fascination for me (I'm originally from Coalville, though exiled in East Kent for a while now), and I've been pondering thoughts of modelling it, and doing some fairly sketchy research in 4mm for a few years now.

You really have done a lovely job, you've caught just the atmosphere of the many photos of it I've seen over the years

Thanks Invicta.

Your comments are gratefully received.

I really need to get on and add the few detais it still needs - including some better level crossing gates!!
