under the weather...

Update - That title's twofold really.

Firstly, I lost most of last week due to some gastro which struck me down...a trip to a rather fine Indian restaurant here soon put my stomach on track... :biggrin_mini:

Secondly, I got stuck in on some more weathering of the rolling stock. Again, using dry brushing techniques and a few MIG powders with a few strokes with some cotton buds too. Its not up there with Mercig's weathering by a long shot but it has given me a little more confidence to keep having a go. I also dunked some DG couplings in a shallow bath of metal black and will swap some of the earlier fitted ones which tend to stick out like a sore thumb in brass.

I attach a few photos first of the Dapol 26 and then the Farish 24. I wish the respective manufacturers in China would sit round a table and agree a common colour for BR Blue  It makes it impossible for them to appear together on the layout...although on this layout I think the loco employed on pass engaged in some shunting between shifts.

Enough of this waffle...here's some photos...

I think that probably now brings a close to the recent work revamping the layout now. Although it is tempting to keep tinkering with it, I am also conscious that I don't want to overcook it with bits and bobs and I nearly ruined the backscene last week at one point.

I will swap the DG's over the weekend and take some final shots next week as the layout is set to appear in a certain 2mmFS bi-monthly publication soon. Perhaps I will post some more shots next week if peeps aren't fed up to see it now.

Thanks all for your interest in this project.

Pete, they've all said it above - but I was particularly taken by this photo. The backscene really works well here.

As usual, it was worth all the trouble :-) Fantastic modelling!

PeteVery nice. Some top notch modelling! I did get your PM about Brafferton. Nottingham was fairly successful and I think a couple of photos have made their way into the exhibition thread.I hope to get the layout re-erected this week and I'll attempt to emulate your success with the camera. :D

Thanks Tony - No worries for the PM - Looking forward to those photos of Brafferton...

Thanks Mikkel - I was in two minds whether to include that photo but am glad I did...Tony (above) bent my ear to put the curve in the backscene....am very glad he did too...

Great photos Pete and the overall effect you've created just reminds me so much of the place; all the elements just work so well, and so simply, together.

Congratulations

Ian

Many thanks Ian - if peeps can associate it with KoL then I have achieved the 'sense of place' that I was hoping too.

I need to hurry as there is a train about to depart for the Duchy...my next adventure... :D

Hi Pete

Lovely, lovely photos. Thanks for the station shot - it really is a neat little model and I continue to be amazed that so much detail can be achieved in 2mm. The Pic that really drew me was of 26038 as seen from a small boat - the train and dock are illuminated by sun whilst a distant storm hovers over the mountains. A really brilliant shot and very well lit. The one that Mikkel picked is also really dramatic - gosh, so much in such a small space. More please!

Regards,

Mike

Many thanks for your kind comments Mike - I think that this may be my last post on KoL for a while as I don't want peeps to be fed up with it and I did promise myself I would get back on my CJM layout in April. I do have a fair amount of wagon kits to be built for the layout though, so I will no doubt pose them against the layout as and when they appear. I will PM you a few more shots though later that didn't quite make it past the editing suite...many thanks for your interest in this project Mike.

Hi Pete

I wouldn't worry too much about peeps not being interested - an excellent model is always appreciated here on RM - besides, KoL has quite a high hit rate. The more and more I look at your work in 2mm FS, the more I want to sell off my 4mm and have a go at it! I think that, if it's done well, 2mm can actually look more convincing - it's something that's really started to intrigue me as it's counter intuitive. It'd be worthwhile exploring this - what do other modelers think about this I wonder? Look forward to the shots.

Yes, I am sure that 2mm FS can be more convincing than 4mm.

It depends what criteria you use in making the judgement:

  • Track quality of 2mm FS can be roughly equated to EM (not to P4) - gauge is correct, but flanges are rather overscale, so probably a draw (unless you are starting from OO, in which case 2mm FS is a clear win).
  • It is obviously difficult to obtain the same level of detail in the smaller scale, so 4mm probably wins on that comparison - but as can be seen the better 2mm FS models are so good that the difference is tiny.
  • Similarly the larger size in 4mm means there is much more weight in the loco, so running quality is probably better there, but if you watch something like Highbury Colliery running you will probably decide that 2mm FS can be more than good enough.
  • Where 2mm FS gains is in the space occupied - you can produce a much more realistic layout in the same space, without having to squeeze the plan to fit (or without squeezing so much, depending on just what you are modelling).
  • Alternatively you can build a more extensive layout in 2mm FS in the same space with similar level of "squeezing", or the same layout in less space, or just add more scenery around the same layout in the same space.

Go for it Mike! Although with Dapol announcing that low price 08 it's difficult to not get dragged in the other direction - PM sent by the way :D

Thanks David - You have answered it far better than I could have done.

Why not give a small layout a crack Mike? Both my 2FS layouts only have two turnouts and the next only has one :O Go for it...

Pete,

It's been a month or two since I last looked on here, for various reasons. This week I have had another unsuccessful trip from London to Devon to try and get my three year old little lad back in my life. In the weeks spent preparing for court, I've not so much as thought about my own plans to make my own little piece the highlands. Time and budget have other calls on them.

The last couple of days, to take my mind off things, I've been cracking out the books, and looking at one or two bits and bobs, and I found myself back here. The very last railway trip I made with my son, a couple of weeks before I saw him for the last time (Dec '10), was a day trip (consecutive nights on the sleeper!) from Euston to Kyle and back. It's a place I first learned of as a kind of myth when I watched Michael Palin's film as a little boy, and which as a railwayman I have since visited and grown to love. Very many happy memories.

I wish I was rich enough to make you an offer you couldn't refuse for what is a beautiful little rendition of a very special place. It's lovely.

I do hope the layout makes it to an exhibition over here again one day. Thanks for sharing your work on here.

Tom, hi

Thanks for this - I am really sorry to hear about that - I do hope that your Court proceedings work out for you as you are hoping for.

I am glad that the layout evokes some special memories for you too.

Although I never quite made it to KoL myself, it certainly has some special qualities...and I might just be revisiting it in 7mm scale :O

Who knows...if the economic situation in Spain doesn't sort itself out...we may well be returning to the UK...watch this space...

The 2mm mag just reached Switzerland, great to see your write-up, a very nice round-up. I hope you keep this blog going from time to time ... I take the point about "overcooking" but I'm sure you will be fiddling with stock from time to time, and it would be nice to see a short video if the layout's not going to leave Barcelona again for a while ;-)

cheers

Graham

Graham, hi - Thanks for your kind comments...my copy should arrive in BCN today, but I saw the proof that Mick S prepared and I was pleased with it and how the photos had reproduced.

Good idea on the video, and perhaps if a new piece of rolling stock appears perhaps that will be an opportune moment to make one...
