Ropley - Painted

The water tower now painted and with basic weathering.

Hi all.

Again a short entry, just to show that the water tower is now painted and semi-weathered. The real thing is somewhat of a mix of colours, from the basic grey through various different shades of rust and (predictably) some green. I started with the green, using Maskol to cover the areas I wanted to show through. the second layer was a basic rust colour, before again Maskol was used to cover the large patch of rust on one side of the tank, and some of the more prominent smaller patches. Its not 100% accurate, but it's closed enough for me! finally the whole thing was sprayed with a light grey.

The next stage will be a few washes to tone down the basic colours (The grey is a little on the light side) and highlight the detail, although I'm really quite pleased at how well the rivets have remained visible, even under 3 layers of paint!

The next stage is to finish the weathering before the finer details are added

Once the weathering is complete, the finer details will be added, although I may leave the ladder off until the layout is nearer completion. It sticks out quite a long way over the top of the tower and will be susceptible to being caught by errant sleeves or hands!

Cheers all,

Tom.

Fantastic work Tom. Can't wait to see the fully finished version!

Love the track work as well, I'm now very tempted to have a go with Easy Track for my new layout!

What else can I add to the above?

Not a lot!

Just to say another fantastic piece of 2mm modelling! Just love this layout it's one of the best on the forum.

Cheers!

Lovely modelling Tom, I suspect the grey looks lighter in the photos than in reality (assuming flash was used when taking the picture). I can only Dukedog's sentiments!

Nice, and I can't help but admire your ability to concentrate on the mundane, but equally fascinating, 'stuff' around the scene before getting into the locos and stock in a big way.

Just a thought for the future, I was pondering which Mid Hants loco (of the recent ish past?) might need a fair amount of scratchbuilding (based on an American chassis...), has a memorable paint scheme and a tender covered in rivets that could be fashioned from those transfers:

How about http://www.flickr.com/photos/12078476@N07/5235100182/in/photostream an S160?

Thanks! Give it a try, I'm pretty sure you won't want to go back to Peco;)

Looking good. Can't wait to see this at an exhibition. Hopefully not to far in the future :-)

I think it'll be a while before the layout is ready to be taken out, but hopefully not too long!

Thanks also Ian! The grey is slightly darker in daylight, but it has dried alot lighter than the tin lid ould have you believe! Some weathering will tone it down just about to the right shade I hope!

Thanks Will. Thats one fugly engine though! The plan is to scratch build a few boilers which are dotted around the yard, both from the S15's currently being restored there I think. The rivet decals will come in very handy for those too!

Cheers all!

Hi Will

That is on the (very) long list of projects once the bulk of the layout is complete as it happens! The real thing hasn't moved for a while now and seems to keep donating its boiler to Thomas, which I suppose is fair enough as the railway needs Thomas in steam constantly, however an N gauge douglas and 3 MK.1s will make a nice little train and add some variety. It's also not one that Farish are likey to announce once it's been scratch built!

Once I'm happy with he ins and outs of sketchup, I think it's an ideal candidate for some 3D printing!

Hello Tom.

I agree with Frank, this is the best N gauge / 2mm modelling here on RMWeb at the moment.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you tackle the point rodding though, I'm struggling with it on Highclere!

Thank you Missy!

I would disagree with both you and Frank as there is some pretty stunning modelling going on around here, not least that based on the DN&SR, but thank you for compliment ;)

As far as the point rodding goes, I have a rough plan of action, and I will do some tests soon to see if it works! I picked up some of the MSE .4mm square rodding, which whilst a little on the large side, looks quite acceptable. Of course there will be a blog entry showing how it goes!

Cheers,

Tom.
