Ropley - Weathered

A quite moment at Ropley between services.

Hi all!

I spent a couple of hours this morning toning down the watertower a little and adding a spot of extra weathering. It's now getting close to how I want it to look and the only addition to the tank itself is a few streaks of light green paint present on the real thing. The first stage was to give the whole thing a wash of very thinned black, which helped take the edge off the light grey. Even in daylight it was much to light, and dried nowhere near like the colour on top of the tin. Before it was dry, I used a dry brush to add a few subtle streaks and add some variation to the finish.

An Alton bound service departs Ropley.

The Rust patch was treated with powders to add some different tones, and I'm quite pleased with the way removing the maskol whilst the paint was still slightly wet has given a very slight raised edge to the grey, making it look like pealing paint. The smaller rust patches had a small amount of powder added which was then drawn down by a brush with a little white spirit on it, to give a rusty rain streaked effect.

The resident Black 5 comes off shed to take water before heading to Alresford for it's first service of the day.

I still need to do some work on the base, which I've left as I wanted to make sure it fitted onto the concrete block before adding detail and having to remove it again. Luckily, it does! if anything I think I may have made the tower a tad too tall, but it's not really noticeable and so I'm going to live with it. The next stage is to add the water pipe and find a way to represent the water in the tank.

Finally, I just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback and comments left on the blog, which have just reached 500. They are all appreciated and encourage me to keep at it when things might not be going exactly to plan, so thank you!

Tom.

Am I the only one secretly wishing that some 1:1 scale person visits the real thing tomorrow and repaints it a nice even tone.... just to see the look on Tom's face....

Here's to the next 500!

Tom I've not visited the blog for a while, this is getting really really impressive. I think many would be fooled into thinking this was EM or P4, and the finish and coloring look very well observed. Great modelling.
