The Finescale Illusion

Every once in a while a modeller comes up with a brilliant idea to improve finescale loco kits. All he has to do, he thinks, is to make a kit which consists of exact scale replicas of all the parts of his chosen machine and people will flock to buy it. So he invests in a new computer, CAD software, buys some GA drawings from the NRM and spends a not inconsiderable time drawing all the components at full scale. In time etchings and other components are produced, a test build is done and photos taken of it. And eventually boxes are filled, orders received, cheques cashed and everyone is happy.

Except.....

Hi bill

I agree. There is one supplier of detail parts who's products are copied from the real thing with no 'design' thought at all, as in how is the end user going to make and fit it. Or their parts are quite simply just made up altogether and look nothing like the real thing. They are not interested in feedback (even backed up with pictures that might help them produce a better product) to save their lives and the majority of what they produce can only be described as utter crap most of the time. Add in that while I appreciate all businesses have to make money their mark up on the bits they supply are astronomical - Nearly a tenner for something that actually costs about 50p, its like they are trying to recover all their development (if you can call it that) costs back off each customer!

As long as it sells though why should they care? That seems to be the attitude.

I have to say though, a lot of the negatives you point out have been aimed at your stuff over the years - lack of instructions, thing that dont work if assembled as designed or things that you can't assemble as designed, leading to the widespread belief that you don't do the test build stage at all.

It's brave for a supplier to point the finger at another supplier as it will always come back and bite you.

Cheers

Jim
