More Virtual Stuff

Hello :)

Ever since the social gathering that was the RMWeb meet my modelling has once again turned to some more virtual modelling in a desperate attempt to get some projects finished off.

Here are a few sneeky pictures of what I have been working on....

Of course, you know that's not proper modelling ;)

Kerosene Castle is looking good, you're well on the way to capturing the front end nicely. That'll look good racing through Highclere!

Fantastic stuff as usual Julia. I love the Peckett - same as the one they had at Bath Gas works and the swanky bit for a fellow 2mm modeller highlighted on your blog looks French to me!!

The Peckett does indeed look good (I climbed over one with a tape rule recently) and I really like the idea of a 2mm City of Truro (I assume thats what that GWR cab front is for).

Who knows, she might even give it working inside motion.

Superb work there on the digital side of out hobby. It is the way the hobby is going and your work is a testament to the fact that great quality results can be had!

I look forward to seeing the final prints!

How did I miss your last blog post?

When I've stopped salivating and am less giddy about the prospect of another locomotive to build (one that might actually be in period) I might have something more constructive to add other than to say "nice work".

Thanks Guys :)

I dont care! It does what I want it to so it doesnt worry me!

There is no reason to do that other than I love how quirky it is. There is still LOTs to do on it though, Im treating it as something to practice on using my solid modelling software.

I am expecting you to 'persuade' me to let you have one at some point! I am guessing at Stormex? I will try to get one printed in time so you can take a close look.

The words Couchere and Porte spring to mind, dont know why....:P

I am going to hold off saying that until the plastic bits are in my hand. Swanky screen grabs are one thing, seeing the model 'in the flesh' is another...

Dont you dare measure mine and compare it!! You are right about the City of Truro too, its one of my all time most wanted engines, fingers crossed it lives upto its appeal to me. Im not looking forward to lining it though! Shall I put you down for one once its all finished? :P

Hahahaha!

I dont know, too busy modelling perhaps?

Maybe we could come to some sort of deal with your SRM? I remember you mentioning on a previous blog post of mine that you didnt think anything would come of it too, shame on you!

The measurements are with someone else who's planning a kit, I just do all the balancing on tanks and holding taperules. Which is great fun and thoroughly recommended!

As for CoT, I could be tempted, 2mm is rather appealing...

The Peckett looks superb, nice work on the collar at the base of the chimney, that is a tricky bit to get right 'virtually' in my experience.

Maybe. At the moment I'm struggling to draw the valve gear correctly, and what I am drawing is for 3'6" wheels so might not make No.93 if that is what you were after. That comment was about a bulldog and on the VAG, and was based on a conversation at St Albans. Let's not go back over that. Hopefully we can talk at length if you're still going to Pendon next weekend?

I meant to add... Does it have a cast/printed boiler rather than being made up from flat pieces? I struggled with the smokebox on my 72xx, which is one reason why it remains un-finshed.

Nice virtual work! The Kerosene Castle will look rather impressive gliding through Highclere! Plenty of space in that bodyshell for a little speaker too.....;)

I have to do something similar for the Farish standard class 4 in the near future and my plan was to draw it in my 3D package (like you have) and to test it out first, then once everything seems to fit transfer the parts to a 2D drawing for etching. As for the 3'6" wheels I have got some 6mm driving wheels 3D printed if they are of any use? I havent a clue what No.93 is or looks like! I just like the idea of a SRM.

I think I have 'missed the boat' on that one which is a shame. I had good intentions of filling out the form and everything but I think I have left it a little late. Ironic really as its quite literally on my doorstep! I guess I could still do Didcot though.

Thanks Tom, thats a very interesting point about the speaker and one I hadnt thought about. I would be interested in that although what did they sound like and I wouldnt even know where to start with something like that. Anyway, its something different and more importantly something that I cant see appearing as a RTR model soon!

Its got a 3D printed boiler. I do have the drawings to make it up from flat sheet but as you know, its not easy, hence opting for the printing route. As for the smokebox on Allens kit I ended up using a piece of K&S Brass tubing and wrapped the etch around it which worked fine. I then used a Brass drawing pin suitably turned down to the correct diameter to form the smokebox door.

TBH I am rather surprised you havent dabbled yet. What can I do to make you try?

It's the one they have built at Didcot.

Oh no! Did you ask Andy nicely? Last thing that was posted about numbers was that there were less than 50 takers and he hasn't posted that it is full.

I've struggled to draw a 3D model of a bulldog firebox that looks convincing to me, despite working directly from the drawings accompanying the article on Nightingale from GWRJ. I rather stupidly trimmed the smoke box wrapper and it is too small. I probably have some tube that is the right size to try this and I can patch the bottom where it is short. Then I just have make a chassis up and save for the wheels.

Find me a nice simple(ish) loco project (not re-wheeling RTR)!
