The return of the N gauge People Mover: SHAPEWAYS PRINTING

Hi All,

the usual apology for the recent 'radio silence' on the blog. I have much to report on from recent weeks, including progress on the N Victoria Bridge and my ramblings in T gauge.

But let's revisit the N gauge Class 139 Parry People Movers hybrid railcar. When we last saw it, some success had been had in creating resin cast transparent bodies for the Kato chassis, and the model had been enjoying itself roaming Wyre Forest MRC's Kinlet Wharf layout at the Blackburn and Stoneleigh shows. I was never entirely satisfied with the MDF/card master that the castings were taken from, though in the end it had turned out pretty good, from a respectable viewing distance :pleasantry:

But it could always be better. Just recently I have been teaching myself 'Google Sketchup' and after a modest amount of frustration and swearing (if I ever actally consulted instructions things would be easier!) fathomed out its secrets and discovered it to be a clever and adaptable program. The result of which is the design below, which has been sent, tonight, to SHAPEWAYS to be printed in their latest 'Frosted Ultra Detail' material. I await the package in the post with interest, and will keep you all posted.

(goes away to wonder what sort of 3D printed superstructure could go on a Dapol terrier N gauge chassis!)

Superb! I tried SketchUp too and gave up (without reading the manual). I should revisit with results like yours!

Glad I was able to contribute - in a very small way...

Do post pics of the delivery!

Regards,

Steve

Looking good Will. I've never got on with Sketchup, nice to see what can be done with it! The windows appear to be solid, have you thought about modelling them open and glaze afterwards?

I've just got some bits for Shapeways in FUD it looks very good although you can still see some of the build lines - its still a big step up for them.

*Entry title corrected to read return OF rather than return ON!

Thanks for your comments, Atso, it was your experiments shown on RmWeb that first got me thinking about this kind of process. I think developments in the last couple of years have changed this kind of modelling forever, but most of us are only just beginning to cotton on to it.

The plan is for this model to be cast as a one piece body with clear resin, so that the 'body work' can be painted on to the outside leaving the window areas clear... I have done a bit of a 'Triang' job and made some things like the black window frames exaggerated a little, in terms of relief detail, to make the details easier to paint!

I want to try a 4mm version too, and for this a better plan for this might be laser cut windows to fit carefully designed apertures... watch this space

Howdy Will!

The Google Sketchup plans look great, can't wait to see the first 'print' come back!

It would be just the way to build some of those swing bridges of yours Tom... have you got any drawings or measurements?

I have the rough dimensions, but would need to make up the drawings myself as non seem to exist. Got quite a few photos last week with a view to 'getting around to it' but then saw the 2011 challenge. Just wondering if I can get the box & main swinging span onto a 20x11 board with scope to extend at a later date. Orrr, go T  :D
