Bristol Barrow Road - Board End Protectors

Scalefour South West is approaching in August and when I was invited to bring Bristol Barrow Road to the show I realised the trolley system I have for transporting the layout was not really suitable for this venue. The trolley is suitable for sports halls but not for Wells Town Hall where the main display hall is upstairs and the lift is not big enough.   With much of the trackwork now in place the ends of the boards needed protection to prevent damage to the track. Similarly some of the board

Bristol Barrow Road - Board 21 tracklaying

Board 21 now has the majority of the track laid - just a couple of 60ft lengths to go. All the track is C&L ply sleepers with functional Exactoscale 4 bolt BR/LMS chairs. I've just received an order for a pack of 500 to complete this board. You will see in the photos lengths of black card which I use under the ply sleepers. The card is 0.2mm thick and 6mm wide and has become my standard practice for track laying following a recommendation by Graham Turner - if you need to adjust any length of

Bristol Barrow Road - Board 21 Track complete

I hope you have all had a good Christmas.   I thought I'd share a few photos of the trackwork added during a quiet hour on Christmas Eve.   Well nearly complete. All the track on Board 21 is now in position with just the sleeper staining - Jacobean Dark Oak - and the droppers - Palatine Models - left to do. The track has now crossed onto Board 20 the track ends being soldered to 12BA brass screws which are screwed through the ply rivets. I use a pair of ply sleepers on each side of the trac

Bristol Barrow Road - Block Instruments & Bells

Just finished scratch building the Block Instruments, Bells, Telephones, Repeaters etc and fixed them to the shelf along with the Signal Diagram display panel - the latter will have a photoshopped diagram added after painting. I now have a Springside kit of whitemetal parts to sell after deciding they were not suitable.   In all a very fiddly job but the results are very satisfying.   The Block Instruments are made from 2.5mm square brass section with square section plasticard inserted into

Bristol Barrow Road - Block Instrument Shelf & Lever Frame

The lever frame is now painted and is ready to go into the box as is the Instrument Shelf complete with the Block Instruments and Bells. Painting the levers was relatively straight forward although I must admit the chevrons on levers 14 & 15 - the Down Main and Up Main Detonators - took a steady hand with the black chevrons added using a 0.25 rotring pen. Levers 19,29 and 22 are also all Facing point locks and consequently are painted black [bottom] and blue [top].     Adding the r

Bristol Barrow Road - Black 5 44965 plus Comet Coaches

Diesels are alright but I thought it about time we had steam so this afternoon my modified Hornby Black 5 44965 stretched her legs around the layout for the first time.   The engine is converted to P4 using Alan Gibson wheels. The Hornby chassis has cosmetic frames - a Gibson milled version - which I attached using strips of plasticard, as spacers, to widen the distance between the frames. The coupling rods and valve gear are the original Hornby ones - I removed the threaded nuts from the Horn

Bristol Barrow Road - Back on track 2

More progress this week with the completion of 6 turnouts - droppers; TOU base plate and all the cosmetic chairs in position - what a job Yesterday I stained the sleepers using Colron Wood Dye - Jacobean Dark Oak with pleasing results. I have now started on the three way turnout leading to the shed sidings......... still not half way there yet   Anyway here are a few photos taken before the stain was added.     C8 crossover on the main line with the north exit leading to a double slip

Bristol Barrow Road - Back on Track 2

Following RMweb taking it's unscheduled Christmas break I realise I have not posted anything for a while. Further progress has been made on the main line with both centre boards now having the C&L flexitrack replaced by ply and rivet track. Limited modelling time over the Christmas festivities has seen all 4 lengths fixed and fully chaired with the ply sleepers stained with Coldron dye. All the main line track is now in position ready for the droppers to be attached.   Here are a few photo

Bristol Barrow Road - Back on track

It's been a while since my last post but I haven't been wasting time. I purchased three magnificent scratchbuilt P4 locos after meeting Graham Warburton at the Taunton members day; a Patriot, 8F and Crab, all of which were in LMS livery. After much heart searching I made the decision to remove this livery and have them repainted and renumbered in BR livery to suit my 1950/60s modelling period. With the help of my friend Morgan all three had their paint stripped and removed and the 8F and Crab a

Bristol Barrow Road - Back on Track

It has been a while since I updated my blog so I thought it was time to let you know what progress has been made.   I have finally completed the first batch of 15 turnouts and one double slip. These are all now fitted with Brian Morgan TOU's and are ready to be installed on the layout. I have also finished the task of making a further 8 and a double slip for our Scalefour Society area group layout Brinkley [ attending Railex next year ].   Whilst at the Manchester Show in October I decided t

Bristol Barrow Road - Bachmann S&D 7F 53809 makes an appearance

As mentioned in my earlier blog I now have a Bachmann 7F 53809 to add to the locos available for the shed. Of course it will now take it's place in the queue for conversion to P4 but for now here are some photos taken on shed the other night.   I wonder if Ultrascale will do a wheel conversion set.     I should have removed the Bachmann couplings - sorry.

Bristol Barrow Road - Bachmann Compound 41140

My latest conversion of a RTR loco is Bachmann Compound 4P 41157 which I have renumbered 41140 as I have a photo of it on shed. Conversion follows my now standard method using Alan Gibson wheels with Markits 10BA crankpins, reusing the Bachmann motion. The tender has a Dave Franks chassis but this time I had to leave off the water pickup gear in order to add extra pickups on the two rear axles of the tender. I'm pleased with the conversion.   Here is a video of 41140 on a Glouceste

Bristol Barrow Road - Ash Plant Buildings 2

The next building on my list is the brick built shed next to the ash plant which I believe housed the plant control equipment.   The model is made from plasticard with overlays of Slaters english bond brickwork. The ladder rom the ground to the roof of the building together with the longer one to the platform on the ash plant are scratchbuilt using 1mm x 0.3mm nickel silver strip whilst the steps are 0.45mm wire. Bristol Barrow Road - Ash Plant Buildings

There are a lot of small buildings and structures in any shed yard not least those associated with the ash disposal plant. My latest efforts have focused on two of these - the small concrete building used by staff working the ash pit and a brick built shed which I believe housed the ash plant controls. Both are shown in the following photo.     The first model to be attempted is the concrete shed, the dimensions of which are scaled from photos in my collection, which is prob

Bristol Barrow Road - Ash Disposal Pits Update

Time for an update on the slow progress with the two ash disposal pits. Unlike the other outside pits, which were all updated and in some cases elongated using concrete, these two pits remained with their original brick structure and 5ft cast iron panels to support the track.   Having made 7 of the 10 lengths of iron panels [ fabricated from brass section] I decided I needed a break and started on the pits themselves. The pit under the ash plant itself is 220ft long and is curved. The shorter

Bristol Barrow Road - Ash Disposal Pits - Update 2

I have been unable to attach any photos to my blog for the past few days - hence the lack of any recent update. It appears to have reverted to the original attachment format so I shall take the opportunity to add some photos of the latest progress.   These photos show my chosen method of fixing the panels to the top surface of the pit walls using brass screws. I am pleased with the result.     Here are a few shots of the panels in position in relation to the shed building.

Bristol Barrow Road - an interlude

On friday my former LMS crab returned from the Severnside Works paintshop for a test run up the main line. Formerly 2798 it has re-emerged as BR 42763. Here are some before and after photos.         The Hawksworth coach is a modified Hornby with drop in P4 wheelsets and has been weathered for it's owner, Morgan, by Gerry Beale.   Another visitor was a Gresley RB dia 167 in BR rebuilt form which Morgan has started to build for the Bradford train.         And finally a shot o

Bristol Barrow Road - Ambulance & Mutual Improvement Hut 2

I've been a bit busy on DIY this past week decorating the bathroom - my regime has been decorating in the morning modelling in the afternoon. Remembering I promised some photos of the Shed in situ here are a few. Keep safe, Robin                     Repainted the darker patch on the door wall as the photo shows it up as too dark.

Bristol Barrow Road - A Bachmann Patriot

My latest conversion is a Bachmann Patriot which has the same chassis as the Jubilee. Wheels are again Alan Gibson with Markits crankpins which have been spaced using 4 x 1mm washers per axle. Brake shoes have been removed an refixed with additional plasticard spacers. The tender has a Dave Franks Fowler sprung chassis.   Below is a link to youtube.  Question: - how do you upload videos from youtube these days?   https://youtu.be/yib4hZZ-TbI

Bristol Barrow Road - 20th November - 50th anniversary of closure

I attended an interesting talk in Bristol last night given by the Barton Hill History Group on the 50th anniversary of the closure of Barrow Road Shed. It was surprisingly well attended - around 200 - with a lot of former railway employees in attendance. As my own commemoration to that day here are my own colour photos taken at the shed around that time. Those showing 1420, 6435 and 7029 are from the 17th October 1965 as I believe are the others.

Bristol Barrow Road - 20ft WorkshopTurntable Update

Since my last entry I have made the majority of the track situated at the rear of the roundhouse. This trackwork is quite interesting as it not only links the two 20ft turntables but gives access to the workshop at 90deg to the turntables. Two spurs off turntable 4 run alongside the boiler house and were used for storage of withdrawn engines [Pugs 51218 & 51217 together with Johnson 3F 43444 are known to have been on these tracks]. Turntable 2 gives access to the water softening plant [ wago

Bristol Barrow Road - ' The Devonian '

It's been a while since I posted anything on this blog however I have been very busy on the layout during the past year completing several small buildings in and around the shed yard and cladding the Barrow Road viaduct with Wills Coarse Stone sheet and making all the scenery along the front of the layout. My latest completed project is the conversion of 11 Bachmann mk1 coaches to P4 using Bill Bedford sprung bogies with MJT frames; Masokits gangway connectors plus other detailing. Her
