Slaters Dean D14 Clerestory - Part 6 - another roof

With the body pretty much finished, I was left with a choice between adding the bodyside fittings or building the roof.   Given I was working outside, the roof seemed the safer option! As mentioned in part 5, I purchased a new roof back at Wells to replace the original which was rather bowed. As I am building a coach at the end of its days the clerestory windows were blacked out (im not sure if that was because they were painted over or the glass was replaced with wood...)   Either way I s

Slaters Dean D14 Clerestory - Part 5

This coach has been kicking around for a long time, having started the build a week after the birth of my first daughter in January 2014! I am determined to get this model finished before the end of May!   The first job (completed last night) was to glaze the coach and then fit the seats. The latter had been painted previously (using the maroon colour for LNER wheels followed by heavy weathering). The aim was to get a finish which looked heavy faded and abused, right at the end of its useful

Slaters Dean D14 Clerestory

Today I have been trying to tidy up the workshop today (which has become a total state over the past few months). As part of this I have been trying to sort out unfinished projects, one of which was the D14 break van needed for my workmans train on Brent.   After painting it last year it has sat waiting for final fittings. So today I set about adding the very nice castings for the grab rails and door handles. Along with a tidy up of excess glue on the glazing.   Really impressed with the ca

Siphons for Cheddar - Siphon J Build

One of the most important sources of traffic to Cheddar was Strawberries, So much so that there were a dedicated fleet of Siphons marked return to Yatton which were used on this traffic.   Through a discussion with Chris F back at Scaleforum, he mentioned that a Siphon J was included in this fleet. Wanting something a bit different to the Lima and Airfix models that will make up the rest of the fleet, I have finally got hold of a Mallard Models kit   First impressions were good, though a f

Siphon J part 2

More progress:   The bogies have now been built, as per the solebar they are lacking the flange on the top and bottom edge (suggesting adding it with microstrip after completion) Still debating if I will replace these with an alternative.   there are two components that appear to be steps, that between a look at the Russel photo of the 7ft American bogie, and looking at the etch I cant work out where it goes.   On the body I have made a start on the underframe trussing, fabricated from L

Siphon F

One wagon I have wanted to model for some time is a Siphon F, after finding a bargain part built K's kit on Ebay at the weekend (including a set of Mallard Models 9ft American bogies) this evening I have made a start on finishing it off.   The bogies were an interesting build, with a brass core and lots of white metal castings to attach. There was some poor design along the way (the cut outs for the wheels are far too small even for OO, while the castings quality was somewhat of its period.)

SEF Mallard Build pt2

A lot more progress on the A4   first up the body, lots more fettling has been completed (although there is still a fair bit to go marked in red).     The lower fairings have been soldered in place, these were prepared by cutting and filing the original fairings to shape.   Some A1 models sprung buffers have been fitted to the front   Remaining body tasks include the pipe on the drivers side, a little more filler, and the cab roof detail.   I'm s

Restoring an Oxford Rail Dean Goods pt2

The first job for this project was to completely strip the existing awful paint finish from the model, it was stripped down to its component parts.  This included the removal of the chimney, splashers, smokebox door, fall plate, whistles, handrails and buffers.   The removed parts were stuck to a length of masking tape to keep safe, somehow it has disappeared in the garage.  Thankfully this only contains the whistles, pipes along the footplate and buffers, so nothing irreplaceable.   W

Restoring an Oxford Rail Dean Goods

Another new restoration project sourced from eBay for the bargain price of just under £30 will add an Oxford Rail Dean Goods to the loco fleet. The source model is the later release (with single flywheel and coreless motor), has had a very bad respray (along with some damaged detail parts) and was sold as a non runner because the seller was confused about the loco - tender coupling and DCC.  In fact it is just a standard DCC ready release and once loco and tender are connected runs nicely.

Restoring an Oxford Dean Goods pt3

A delivery from Brassmasters today with the remaining parts for the Dean Goods, I have replaced the oil pipe cover with the Finney part (which has a little more meat to it than the Oxford one).  A pair of Finney lamp irons were added to the footplate (I think these were missing on the base model), I am debating replacing the end lamp irons as well.  Finally on the engine the Finney smokebox door dart was glued in place.   Moving onto the tender, a pair of Springside break / water

Renunbering and DCC Hornby King

6013   This morning I replaced the tender to loco socket on the Kings tender, using the part left over from my 28xx. This is a much older part, (black circuit board), and built to a far higher quality than Hornby are currently using.   After installing a Lenz Gold and connecting the loco to the tender, it ran perfectly. Now just need to find a soloution for the other one (and hope that Hornby have sorted the issue on the 2016 King Charles II   6027 While I try and work out how I am going

Renunbering a DJM 14xx: 1470

Ever since it’s release I have wanted to get a DJM/ Hattons 1400 class, the only problem being that while Newton Abbot had a number of them allocated, they were not used on the Kingsbridge. (At least I have not seen any evidence of use on the branch). Further more there were no mainline turns en route to a different branch which would have taken one through Brent (other than a 1400 stationed further west en route to NA or Swindon for a works visit. This said, in the post war period there were a

Rebranding Hall, King, 72xx and WD pt2

Onto the second stage of the renumberinf project, as previously mentioned shifting the original logos was a lot harder than expected. Some varnish and weathering will be needed to finish it off.   With the original logos removed it was time to replace with HMRS transfers for the new logos. At this point I realised I had forgotten to remove the buffer beam numbers (so out with the Microsol again... While I was at it I also remembered the crest is in a different place on a Great crest Western

Ratio LMS diag 138 CK

One of the planned formations for the layout is a Plymouth - Crew inter-regional set, this will be comprised of GW BCK (Sunshine Stock) GW CK (sunshine), GW BTK (collet bow ended) LMS BTK (period 3), LMS CK (LNWR diag 138) and LMS TK (Bachmann). The formation could also run with a restaurant (for which I should have a choice of a H33, a planned H16 70ft, and an LMS 70ft. See http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/101805-lmsgwr-inter-regional-workings/for more info   The idea is

Python - Part 1

Last week I bought a job lot of GWR wagon kits from Ebay, containing 5 GWR open wagons of varying diagrams and a Parkside GWR Python.   While I have no photos showing Pythons on the cheddar branch, I'm sure I've read that they were used for parcels traffic. As such having one working in the carriage workings book containing an unspecified parcels van, I figured this little model would offer something a bit different to the standard bogie siphons (that will be out in force on the Strawberry tr

Post Scaleforum to do list...

Scaleforum has yielded another batch of new projects, though my other half taking our puppy on an emergency trip to the Vets while I was at the show limited the budget somewhat (and hence I havent quite been able to make a couple of purchases.)   The B Set project has gained a set of ABS battery boxes, but still requires new Vac gear and some of the Model Railway Developments square GWR buffers once they get some stock in.   Picked up a pair of GWR Collets (Bachmann break and Mainline) from

Pdk 47xx part 2

Making use of one of my few remaining Friday afternoons off work I have cracked on with the 47xx body.   It has now been fitted with all the remaining castings (epoxy) and etches (soldered except for the footplate steps under he smokebox which were too fiddly for me.)   The pipe along the right side of the boiler was formed from brass tube, I pinned the cab end onto some 1mm brass rod to hold the two together   This was followed by drilling holes for the handrails.   There are three t

PDK 47xx part 1

One of the last few major locos that I will need for Brent is a 4700, this is intended for use on the perishables express freight, the milk train and the odd passenger train. In other words of the 3 remaining missing locos which are required to perform a full operating cycle, this is the least important (vs the 4300 and Bulldog which are used on far more workings.) The plan had been that I would buy one of the soon to be released Heljan models, however seeing a partially built PDK kit on eBay

Things are really starting to come together on the 47xx, at the current rate of progress I would say there is less than a week’s work remaining until it will be finished (so I should certainly achieve my main aim of beating the Heljan model.   The first task last night was to finally get those top feed pipes added to the lower boiler, these were formed from L shaped lengths of 1mm brass rod glued into the resin boiler and then soldered to the footplate. There is a certain logic which says I w

PDK 4707 part 9

For the latest update I have managed a fair bit of progress, more or less getting back on track with the build.   The first task was to get the tender parts washed in CIF and then sprayed with etch primer, this will mean that at the very least the black can be sprayed on the chassis tonight (as can the green if I make it to Halfords after work.) Most annoyingly the masking tape fell off the buffers mid spray, so they have now been ceased up with grey paint! (I know I could have removed the

Modelling time last night was significantly limited, meaning there was no opportunity to do any painting. I have however finished off soldering handrails to the tender and glued on all of the castings to the tender body.   I have also made a start on the loco to tender coupling, first I filed a flat on the rear frame spacer and drilled a 1.8mm hole approximately in the centre. This was then fitted with a bolt soldered into position, before soldering two bearings into the holes on the coupli

PDK 4707 part 7

The plan last night was for some painting, followed by the completion of the soldering on the tender.   I started with the painting, the chassis was sprayed Halfords Satin Black while the body was sprayed in Halfords Rover Brooklands Green. Unfortunately the latter ran out half way through so I need to buy more before I can finish it off. I will also need to have a look at how best to angle paint onto the model, as I am struggling to get coverage of a couple of areas behind detail (lower fir

Given that the 47xx body is now complete (with the exception of the top feed pipes which I keep forgetting to add!)   My original thought was towards making a start on the cylinders assembly in order that I could finish off the chassis. However given that it will require shortening the lead crankpin, a task I do not want to do until I have soldered the washers into place to hold on the con rods) the cylinders will have to wait until I paint the chassis. Which reminds me I must go to Halfords

I am now on the home stretch with the 47xx, first up the Black has now been painted. I couldn’t believe how long it took to mask the green, some areas such as the splashers were particularly tricky.   Once dry it was then time to brush paint the tricky areas, along with two small patches where the black seaped under the masking.   The red has had another coat added (although still needs a third coat), and the transfers have been added to the tender. Finally the tender chassis and sub chas

PDK 4707 Part 10

I only have 3 more Friday afternoons before changing jobs and having to work a full Friday, so I have been making the most of it.   The first job as was to finish off the clyinders, first up the castings were added (glued into place with superglue), before soldering the crosshead to a pin through the drive rod. In order to secure the pin I used a piece of etch offcut drilled with a 0.8mm hole soldered in position (rather than the supplied nut which I lost in the carpet!)   With this finis
