About this blog

UPDATE 20TH JULY 2020Calshot (MkII) is no more! Sadly, I decided to abandon the project due to being stored in a dusty garage for 10 years. However it is more than likely to live on in another guise... watch this space!

Calshot MkII - 009 Diesel Critter

As I'm sure some of you will be aware, I have started construction of a freelance diesel (009) for Calshot. It is based on the Knightwing kitbash that I started a while ago and never got round to finishing. The chassis is from a Dapol M7, but it looks as though i'll have to add some lead weight in both bonnets. Here's where I have got up to so far:       Hope you like it, there's still more to do on it such as the rear bonnet end and handrails as well as other little details and tidying up

Operation Mirror Image - Day 2!

So, another day is drawing to a close...   ...which means I have been busy on the extension! Well, truth be told it is not just me - it makes sense to use my dad's carpenter skills. Although I did do a bit of the carpentry, he did the vast majority. The turntable doesn't turn (yet!) but we'll be looking into that tomorrow I expect.   Op. M.I. Counter Time so far today - 3 hours 20mins split as follows: 3hrs - woodwork for the baseboard 20 mins - engine shed alterations Running to

V.2 Operation Mirror Image

Despite my status update earlier, I'm still planning an extension, not just a fiddle yard. Here's my latest plan after a thought struck me earlier. It occurred to me that my abnormally-shaped plan for my extension would be hell to transport! So, I took the original layout and mirrored it and came up with this:     This design allows me to stack the two boards on top of one another. I'd have to create a squared off section for the original board to make it easier to connect the two boa

Where I'm headin' next...

It's been a fair few weeks since I've actually done anything productive on the layout. The only thing I have done is print out the information panels! I'm now looking to do two major things: Sort out running issues Add some details Sorting out the running issues After a very quick scour over the layout, the probable source of the running issues has become clear. Firstly, there is a tiny amount of glue between the stock rail and the check rail of one of the standard gauge points. Second

The final push?

With a deadline moving ever closer I've still got loads more to do. However, I have managed to achieve the following: . NG Infill painted . Stream grass banks added . Castle horizontals scribed . Bottom section of Castle scribed and painted . Sea painted . Sea walls painted . Fascia fitted . Some weeds added . Ballasting started   But I've still got loads to do: . Paint SG concrete infill . Scribe the rest of the castle . Paint the castle . Build the castle roof and gun emplaceme

The construction of Calshot - Part One

I have (with the help of carpenter Dad, of course!) made a strong start on the construction of Calshot. For those that requested, I have put up a gallery that will contain all the pictures from the construction process. Total time spent so far (excluding planning (!)) - 120mins.   Here's the gallery: http://jamiewarne.fotopic.net/c1870342.html   (Can't link to one of the photos because it doesn't agree with the system so I can't show a sample image.) Should make some very visible progress

Late night inspiration...

Just been playing around with some bits of paper after having comprehensively re-read the narrow gauge book on Calshot. This sketch doesn't sound that feasible given the right hand hangar will scale down to 36cm wide. (Not 50cm as I originally said) Alternately, the castle can be on the left hand side.   I'd ideally like to follow the prototype as close as possible, in the next few days I'll have half a dozen NG wagons to play with which will need to be modified to resemble the real things.

A scenario in 4ft

Today I took an hour off my busy revision schedule to continue planning the new layout. This is the latest (!) idea. There are bits I like, and bit's I don't.   I like the left hand end of the plan, but I'm not sure about the station as by the time I've marked out 47cm, there isn't a lot of station that can fit there! The station by the way is based on Lymington Pier as it was. I particularly liked the buffer stops that ended abruptly at the quay edge!     The second sketch shows the ba

Calshot MkII - 3D designs - Module one with added map

Having another go with the 3D modelling today and I've come up with a possible design for Module One: The 3 road track into the engine shed can be seen top left.   I might be able to start building this before the exhibition next weekend.   Any ideas or suggestions? I think that I might add a water tower and a coal pound just to give the loco shed some facilities for the locos!

Castle Plastering

Well, progress has been slow on Calshot due to life in general, but today I got cracking with some DAS modelling clay. First, the castle needed a good sand down before the DAS could be applied, nothing too special, just enough to get rid of the large lumps of polycell on it. The clay was then rolled out and covered over the castle. The window areas were pushed in to form a recess. Unfortunately I only had enough clay to do half of the castle, so the bottom half will have to wait until I can get

Unique, interesting or just plain silly?

It's about time I actually involved my brain instead of persisting that 'I can't do it' or that I've got 'modellers block' when in actual fact I haven't sat myself down and really thought about the project!   I always set out to build something unusual from the very start. Yes, there are more and more RAF base layouts nowadays, but they always use the same kits. I wanted to build something unique - a seaplane base, the only layout I can think of with a seaplane base is the inspirational and

Progress and whetting the appetite!

Just a quick entry today with time enough to show you how I am progressing with the layout plan. It has taken me many hours to get to this stage on the 3D model, the textures aren't brilliant though. The main shell of the layout is shown, awaiting track, buildings, vegetation and the odd bits such as groynes and a jetty... Hope it whets the appetite enough, I should be able to get most of it done by tomorrow night! I appreciate there isn't much to see at the moment, but it should all become cle

Research, Thought Processes (!) and Inspiration

Saturday, 13 February 2010 | Research, thought processes and inspiration...   Well, it's been a confusing week with decisions over the layout, so to give me some inspiration, I picked up a book to research the Calshot NG Rlwy further.   Abbreviations: NG: Narrow Gauge SG: Standard Gauge CNGR: Calshot Narrow Gauge Railway   As I flick through, my love for narrow gauge is strengthened, however, what about the standard gauge stock I own. Well, obviously I won't get rid, so I need to incor

Introducing the Cassette and Slot fiddle yard...

This is my latest design for a fiddle yard. Based on many simple theories - cassettes, sector plates and turntables. As you can see, both the locomotive turntable and cassettes can rotate 360 degrees by way of a pin in a slot that runs the width of the fiddle yard. The area at the back stores two cassettes whilst the other one is being rotated. Whether someone has done it before I have no idea, but after many failed sketches I came up with what seems to be a feasible fiddle yard with little n

Textured paper - Wooden hangar doors

Stubby47 said he is going to base his boat repair shed using doors similar to the hangar on Calshot. This made me think - 'Maybe I could put some more effort into them'. I had always thought they could be improved, and now was the chance to do so.   The texture was made from a stock image and then 'stained' to the right colour. It was then brightened in Paint.net and printed off at the correct size. If anyone wants the image send me a PM and i'll see what I can do.

Phase Three - An idea

I've had an idea:     The Nissen hut I would envisage as being something like this one: http://www.ingr.co.uk/images/gardrum%20news.jpg   This plan would also solve the problem of the sea join which is an added bonus. I would model the lifeboat station as no longer functional, however, I could add a slipway in front of it and making it operational. Just a question of taste I suppose.   By the way, the infilling is pretty much complete and the castle taking shape. Comments welcome as us

- The narrow gauge is completed - General matters -

Right folks, here's the latest happenings on Calshot. The rest of the narrow gauge line has been layed and infilled.   Now here is the state of play at the moment. Instead of the line going into the castle, I felt that there wasn't enough rom there so I decided to split the NG line round each side of the castle as you can see. Tomorrow I will be sanding it down and then scribing it to represent concrete slabs. Then I might try the plastikote spray (as you can see by the goods platform and han
