The Works - 'D' Shop takes on repairs

The Roof is more or less complete and so is the front. Here are a couple of shots of the layout.

The shot above shows how the roof detaches and how the end gable wall slots out. In retrospect I wish I had made the back wall detachable, but it does have viewing arches so a camera lens can be pushed through.

It would be pretty rare to have diesels in the same shop as steam locos, but it did happen. Anyway I couldn't resist uploading this picture as it shows off the roof details nicely.

 

I'm using Dapol plastic kits for the steam locos in for repairs. These are great and are easy to cut up and glue together to show the various stages of how a loco was overhauled.

 

There's still a few to build and a lot more workshop type stuff to go in yet.

 

I've not had much time to model as the weather here is superb at the moment. We've had a week of 31 degree days so there's no excuse not to work on the garden!

Totally convincing!  Usually there are "give aways" and I can make a reasonable guess to the scale, but if that that second picture appeared in a prototype shed book, I dont think I'd be any the wiser!

And congratulations on finishing the roof. It can be a real pain, as I know from experience, but yours looks just right.

The roof was a pain, but I've learned that if you want it all to look good you've just got to be patient as you build.  Thinking things through from the beginning and sticking to a plan is also the way to go.  I wish I had as much experience with this as you though as it would be nice to have included gusset plates at every join and also to use angle instead of wire as on the prototype.  However, 'D' Shop, as with most of my layouts is a 'quickie' otherwise I just loose interest and starting thinking about other projects.  I was hoping that the use of lighting effects would give it that aura of reality and this is working out well.  Maybe next time I'll do it right and aim for those sunlight effects on true relief brickwork as with your warehouse.  Simply stunning craftsmanship.  

 

The corrugated effect was really simply to do as it's just Scalescenes Aged Corrugated texture printed on acetate.  Those textures of theirs are just brilliant and show up really well in photos.

That's extremely flattering, Dave, as that's exactly what I'm aiming for.  This is where lighting and smoke come into it - you can make a model look so real if you get it just right.  Mind you, you have to take about 50 snaps before you get that perfect shot.  

 

Now it's the detailing of the shed with all the associated clutter a loco workshop contains.  They really were fascinating places and I really enjoy the photos of them in British Railways Illustrated.  There's also brilliant articles written by people who actually worked on the engines and you can learn a lot about the thinking behind the management decisions taken by BR during the transition period.  Looking back now, it seems madness to have built steam locos that would only be run for a few years, but they were caught out by the dilapidation caused by the war and need to get the country up and running again.  There was also an awful lot of work involved in maintaining the fleet and a steam loco could spend 35% of its actual life in the shop!  What narks me most, however, is the fact that GB no longer produces its own engines anymore.  It seems to me that privatization has caused more damage to the railways than anything Beeching did as '96 marks the year that the last mainline loco was built in Britain (forgetting Euro Tunnel).   These works must have been brilliant places in their time - imagine watching raw materials come in at one end and brand new locos out the other!  What have we done to ourselves?!

You are more than welcome as I'd really like to see others having a go at one of these places.  It'd make a smashing display case on one of the bookshelves.  The workshops of Britain really were fascinating places of innovation and pragmatism.   I grew up in Birmingham which was known as the city of a thousand trades and we made everything at one time or another (including locos) - something that doesn't seem to be celebrated anymore.
