Wired for Sound

KH1

blog-0029267001381517345.jpgSpent a little session on the Hunslet this morning fitting the DCC decoder and wiring up the speakers. I had already fitted the speakers into the tanks and the chip went in the bunker. I am only going to wire up one speaker, the other is there as a spare as although it would be possible to get to them it would not be easy. The only thing that won't fit in the bunker is the capacitor which I have put up in the top of the fire box. I have run the wires below the foot plate inside some black heat shrink so although not invisible they will hardly be noticeable from normal viewing angles. Only real frustration now though is that I intend to keep it as DC until it is properly run in as I have found it is all too easy to blow up a chip with the usual teething problems of a new mechanism.

Hi,

What are you planning to use as the basis for the sound file?

I'm assuming a generic 2 cylinder loco?

Thanks

Mike

The chip has a rather American (fine for the Baldwins!), sound on it but I do have the PR3 sound loader so will eventually get around to loading something a bit more suitable - there is a 14xx up there that might do the trick. For the longer term I shall have a go at making my own sound profiles from something even closer like Gelert on the WHR. I know this has just gone out of service but it will probably be up and running again by the time I get around to it! A bigger problem will be finding something suitable for the Dick Kerr petrol electrics - can't think of anything else that uses that arrangement.

I think the Dick Kerr's used the same engine as a 40hp simplex, I'd have to confirm that though.

I wonder how much noise the electric transmission would have made?

The preserved Hunslet will hopefully be up and running in a few years and there's the Baldwin 4-6-0 running (or it was recently if not now, I think at Leighton Buzzard?)

The Hunslet is coming along nicely, I won't be putting sound in mine as it would mean sound chipping a 20hp simplex and a 40hp as well.

Thanks

Mike

I imagine the generators and motors must have hummed a bit. There is a Dick Kerr restored in France although it has been fitted with a diesel. Unfortunately it was not running when I was there but has anyone heard it run?

I have fitted sound to my Wrightlines protected Simplex and my Lawton 20HP although this did mean removing the second gearbox for the fan drive but as I could not get this to work it was no real loss.

Actually was just thinking - a friend of mine has a rather nice Tesla electric sports car, perhaps I should record that and overlay onto a recording of my MG with the through exhaust. Might come close!
