Comet GWR H26 12 wheel diner part5

After finally getting the baby to bed at half 11 last night there wasn't much time to work on the coach, with the corridor ends, roof detail and buffers now added. I did find the castings a little poor quality, lots of flash and requiring a lot of straightening on the corridor connection.

It looks like the coach body isn't quite sitting square on the chassis yet, so that is the next task planned. Then it's a choice of sorting the interior or cutting those gas tanks to size

Thanks, think looking at that I will chop off the supports completely and then add some thick plastic as a support between the tanks and the floor.

I also need to put the underframe boxes back on (as originally they fouled the bogies)

Looking at those photos of your centenarys I wish mine were painted by Larry, that's a fantastic job!

I have got one of these to do, so looking forward to seeing this one come on. I'm glad you managed to sort out the error with the end plates, or whatever they're called. I don't think the instructions are as clear as they could be in this area.

I suspect yours will be painted long before mine...

The instructions were pretty poor (I think they said to use scrap etch to space the bracket up the end to clear the floor, which would have still left the solebar far to thick.)

To be honest there are quite a few weaknesses in the comet design, If I was more confident with forming the tumblehome I think I would be firing up AutoCAD and drawing up my own sides.  Having just seen an integrated droplight and hinges etch on Coachman's thread I want that in 4mm (better yet if you glued rather than soldered in place (as I often do) you could fit the hinges and droplights post painting and lining.....

That bit about the scrap etch confused the hell out of me for days. Did they want me to solder it to something? I couldn't work it out at all, until I dismantled another Comet coach and figured out the assembly logic. If they'd just said "you need to space this bit up a bit so rest it on a bit of scrap for the time being" all would have been clear! The second one I built, I just eye-balled the offset.

One thing I would say about the solebar is that it will look better once the footboards are in place.

Doing the hinges is a real pain. I only bother with the upper and lower ones, and glue small bits of plastic in place, just before adding primer.

I'm thinking about making some sort of assambally jig with some 0,7mm strip wood to support the bracket.

Ref the hinges, I'm glad the next couple of coaches I have to build only have one door per side.

Once I get on to building compartment stock I am really going to have to think about the etching route...

I wonder if Dave Geen or Worsley Works coaches have hinge holes etched through?
