Wills Saint pt2

The Fatadder

Every so often I get inspired after reading about somone else finishing a white metal kit to dig out this project, and have another look.

The build has now got to the stage of applying filler (lots of it) to rectify the deficiencies of the original castings. As a result this evening I have taken it outside for a coat of primer to show up what remains to be done. Given it will be sprayed black (and that Halfords Satin Black is one of the worst paints I've used for showing up blemishes on the underlying model), I think there are likely to be a fair few coats of primer here!

as can be seen the top of the firebox, and a crack in the boiler top are the priority, along with a little more work on the footplate.

Once I am happy with the finish on the boiler top / footplate I will replace the chimney / bonnet cover and add the remaining details before giving it a final coat of primer.

I am having some issues with clearances between the footplate/splashers and the chassis. I think it is as a result of a poor fit of the cast metal lump, as I have a spare Perseverence chassis for a Hall I am tempted to modify this to fit and go for an etched option....

With regard to the footplate / chassis clearances, was the "Saint" one of the Wills kits designed to fit onto RTR Hornby chassis with an incorrect wheelbase? If it is, I'm not sure if SEF got round to correcting it when they took over years ago.

If it's uncorrected, then there might be a mismatch between your splashers and your Perseverance chassis (which does have the correct wheelbase).

Thanks for the warning

I do have the crude lump of white metal supplied with the kit as a chassis, I vaguely recall checking this vs the drawing in Russel at the start of the project, but will be checking again this evening to be sure, worst case the splashers will need chopping off and replacing...

I've also been reminded that there is an outside chance in "OO" that your leading and driving flanges may touch. You've got 6'8" drivers there, and only 7' between centres!

Fun stuff,

I keep forgetting about the flange clearance requirement, it just doesn't register as a consideration after so long using P4. That said if the original chassis is right, the clearance is just ok.

Yesterday I realised that all of my existing wagons are not able to be converted as the weight fouls the OO flange

So the boiler has had a couple more coats of primer and another two applications of filler and is now almost complete.  Of course I cant actually find the chimney and top feed / bonnet.

It's not in the box with the other parts for this loco, so going to have to search through various spares boxes...

The Romford wheels have a number of damaged crank pins, all of which are proving very difficult to remove.  Hopefully they are saveable...   The Gibson pony truck wheels which were completely rusted were at least recovered after some work with the fiberglass pencil.

Once I finally get the wheels apart I will try matching the frame up against the etched one.

OT, but apparently there was an etched kit for the "Saint" at one time or other, ProScale I think. Never actually seen one, and I'm not sure anyone else tried producing an all-etched kit either.

Horsetan is right. Proscale did a Saint and so did Falcon Brassworks. Similarly, I've never seen examples of either model.
