This month really hasn’t gone well. Just when I thought the new Hobbytrain Re4/4 IVs might never arrive - this appeared on the Scograil website:

Looks pretty good, runs really well and of course a vast improvement over the old Roco model in terms of detail.

    Must resist getting another!

    Mark

That looks really good! Is the pantograph poseable like their Re620’s or is it sprung?

The windscreen wipers look seperately fitted. That’s a nice touch.

I've been waiting for a sound demo before making a decision. Is there one out there?

Is it the angle of the photo or does the front cab windows slant not look quite right?

P.S. please don’t shoot me, just saying.

A real bargain just arrived today. Hobbytrain Re4/4 II of the first batch in green. There’s a 2021 date written on the box, but it looks like it’s never been used and ran well straight from the box.

Even the most discounted price I’ve seen for a ‘new’ one was in the region of £120. This one, £50!

And I thought the days of the eBay steal were long gone.

That's a really nice model Mark and a super price too. I have the same one in red, they are lovely runners too.

  4. Hi guys,

Many thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I think I’m going to go with a combination of all suggestions. I’ll model the back wall with the doors for the fire escapes as they are on the end and could be potentially visible. The windows I’ll try and print or maybe just leave blank and paint a dark grey or something, but I’ll add the panelling so at least it’s there. This means no window cutting so should be straight forward.

    Best regards,

  5. Evening all,

    Question for the floor -

I have a dilemma with regards to the back of the office block that I am currently building. Here is a Google street view of the back of the building.

    35F023D4-A27E-443E-A824-52241B46736C.jpeg.08bf1eb44ce57c4c404853cb0f6a78c2.jpeg

As you can see, another large batch of windows to be cut out! 😬

    So here is my question:

Bearing in mind that this is the back of the building and it is going to sit about 15cm or so from the back scene, do I really need to model all the windows? At absolute best, the view will be the one below from the front/far end of the layout. I doubt the back will be able to be viewed at all, let alone see all the window details.

Could I get away with adding a plain back to the building and just having the fire escape staircase as the sole detail to one side and the large chimneys to the other?

The only issue I can see is that “I’ll always know that there are no windows modelled to the rear”.

All comments and suggestions very welcome.

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

  6. Afternoon all,

Been adding some more layers to the front of the office block.

There is panelling just under each of the window rows and for this I found that 2mm spaced planking from a 0.5mm plastic embossed sheet seemed to be the best fit looking at Google street views of the real thing and the number of panels underneath each window aperture.

Here is a screenshot of the real thing from Google street view.

And here is the paneling fitted to the model. I think it’s worked out quite well. There are still some more layering details and strips to add to finish but quite happy so far.

Some of the window apertures need cleaning up still but now I have the panelling on it will make this much easier to ensure they are all as identical as possible

I’m going to send some drawings to York Modelmakers this week for the window frames and see what they can come up with for me.

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

The kids have been keeping me busy lately and modelling time (or even time to check into the forum) has been very limited. Whilst progress has been slow, the first plaster has gone down and will hopefully make a nice base for starting some scenic work as time allows.

I would be tempted to contact York Modelmaking - they do a bespoke laser cutting service. I have used their windows and doors in layouts and find them better than 3D printed items.

All I can say is: “Well done!” for tackling sleeper spacing.  A few years ago I tried it on a Micro-Layout (OO) to use up some old Setrack:

    spacer.png

I probably only had to do three or four yards’ worth - but that was enough to put me off for life!  One day I’d be curious to try making some track, but unless or until that day comes around I’ll live with the compromises in commercial track, Keith.

    That looks good Keith.

There’s about 16 meters of concrete sleepered track on the main running lines of Gelternau so I’ll probably do it bit by bit to break up the monotony a bit.

I’m carrying on with one of the buildings today so will update later with progress on that. A late Sunday lunch first though!

    Best regards,

I still do not know if all European countries use the same spacing, or what it should be.

    Hi Ian,

I’m not sure either to be honest but I’m just going off photos I’ve seen  and screen shots from videos.

It seems the wooden sleeper spacing is fairly close so the Peco track could be near enough spot on as in this screenshot at Olten station.

Its more the concrete spacing which seems to be different depending on location and when the track has been renewed.

I’ve used this screen shot from Google street at Rupperswil as a reference.

The spacing seems further apart here so thought I would try and replicate this on the layout

  11. Evening folks,

In the series “I’ve got 101 unfinished items on my workbench”, I decided to add one more!

I have a love/hate relationship with Peco code 55 track, I like it’s practicality but it’s just not quite right in it’s looks. In an effort to try and make it look as good as I possibly can, I decided to have a go at increasing the sleeper spacing.
i read somewhere on this forum that the sleeper spacing in N gauge is about 3.5mm. So I bought a 3.5mm square strip of metal strip and set to work.

Cutting the sleeper webbing to separate each sleeper from the next is a nightmare and took forever but I think I’ve got a technique going now which saves a bit of time.

Once the webbing has all been removed the individual sleepers can be slid along the rails quite easily.

Before glueing down, I pre-spaced the sleepers to 3.5mm apart and then once glued down, some minor adjustments needed to be made just to ensure they sit straight and that none have moved in the process.

I’ve completed about 1.5 meters of track and I’m quite pleased so far, but would welcome all comments.

Once painted, ballasted and weathered, the difference will be quite noticeable.

    A couple of photos.

The first with a length of unaltered track in the foreground with the adjusted track glued down behind.

A small section of track in the foreground and the altered track behind which I hope shows the adjusted sleeper spacing.

  12. Morning all,

I stumbled across this video last night which shows some nice footage of Swiss trains in 1990. There’s about half a dozen or so that have been uploaded in the last 48hrs (at least 3 hours of footage in total!) plus also if you go to the channel, there’s a whole host of videos from a similar era.

Hers the one I watched, well worth putting the kettle on beforehand as you’ll want a nice cuppa while watching these!

    Enjoy folks!

    Best regards,

No, still working on fettling the layout to ready it for the SRS AGM.

The ICE4 should be 12 coaches but my Thunersee layout is compact so I felt 7 cars would be  a good compromise so I made the purchase (but not before I'd ventured outside the hall to get phone connectivity for a quick internet search for  pictorial confirmation that green stripe ICE4 run/have run at some point to Interlaken.

Good to shout to check for prototypical info. I’m sure I’ve spotted this version in some of the Swiss railways videos I’ve seen recently.
