  1. A slight update to the above. It appears that what I thought was a grill modification on my older models was actually standard on those, therefore the older body does not appear to be compatible with the Next18 chassis without modification either.

Id say they are spot on. From my research and little memory of the time I think Transpennine was a livery carried at the time and was darker. Regional Railways comes along based on this but think the shade of blue got a bit lighter.....

As far as I am aware, the only colour that changed from Provincial (Trans-Pennine) to Regional Railways was the lower beige/grey colour. For Provincial, it was the same shade of beige as used on the InterCity livery. For Regional Railways, it was updated to a silver/grey.

  3.

I have just tried swapping bodies between the 6-pin and Next 18 versions this morning.

The PCB is in a lower position on the Next18 chassis, to accommodate the speaker.

I think the older body should fit on the Next18 chassis without issues, although mine had an etched grill fitted by the previous owner and the inner profile of that prevented it from fitting properly.

The new body will not fit on the older chassis without modification. See where I have placed the end of the cocktail stick below. The part of the new body that fits into that recess will not clear the same area on the older chassis.

The Mk2a BFK is an easy conversion, use the compartment interior from a Mk1 FK shortened and attach it to the brake area of the BSO. Yellow stripe and numbers from Railtec.

Roof shell vents would have to be reworked as well. A ready to run one would be more desirable!

Am I the only one who thinks these coaches have Collectors club exclusive written all over them?

For anyone that wanted to complete a full rake, it would mean being in the Collector's Club. They may be better as regular releases. I think it is more likely we will see 47475 (perhaps as a regional exclusive) than the matching coaches, given that it was in the Parcels sector for a while in that livery after Trans-Pennine loco-hauled ended.

My wallet breaths a sigh of relief!

It's a bit sad that there's still no Mk2a BSO in Regional Railways (did such a thing exist or were they all Mk2b/c), ditto no re-run of Mk2a TSO in blue/grey (both missing from the last re-run on Mk2a).

A nice spread of models - I had hoped for a WYPTE class 158. It's a shame the Regional Railways 158 is a copy and paste of the livery on 371-850 - one with "Express" branding would have been more interesting.

Perhaps Spring 2023 will bring both along with some more class 47 liveries? Along with new liveries on the likes of the class 37 and 90. Surely the 37 has to be next for a Next18 upgrade?

With all the MK1s finally reproduced this year, hopefully 2024 will be the year of the MK2A. A Regional Railways BSO is an obvious missing choice, but a few BFKs wouldn't go amiss either.

I too would prefer a 158 with the original EXPRESS branding. I will hold off in the hope that such a version will be produced one day.

Another positive announcement for N gauge.  It is good to see that there are extended runs of models with alternative running numbers.

I would imagine next year there will be a fair few class 47's announced with some regional exclusives (could I please have 47475 in provincial, 47973 in Midland Counties maroon and a Crewe allocated Stanlow Petroleum example please).

I agree on 47475. I would certainly take that one. After Trans-Pennine, it wore that livery for a while when it was allocated to parcels work.

    Would be nice wouldn't it!

Bachmann have made the Mk2a BFK in OO in Regional Railways - shame they've not matched it in N (yet!?). No Regional Railways BSO though.

It's frustrating for anyone wanting to replicate actual formations - I've found very few photos with Regional Railways Mk2a TSO that don't have a matching brake vehicle. I have to squint at my rake as it runs with Regional Mk1 BSK.

Farish have not made a single MK2A BFK so far. I'm sure there are plenty who would purchase 2 of them for Waterloo-Exeter formations, since there were two of them back-to-back in the middle of those rakes for a good while. Also blue/grey, InterCity and Regional Railways of course. There were also the ex-NSE BFKs and TSOs that were transferred to the north west, debranded and had the light blue stripe painted over the red. Those lasted a while and were common within those rakes, so a regular release would even be justified.

2D-019-013 HST Blue/Grey Bookset and 2D-019-014 HST Intercity Swallow Bookset are now available.

Although there was not time to completely rework the Swallow livery, we have been been able to modify the colour palette with a much better Falcon Grey. I had to bring one home with me from Chirk yesterday...

Providing the feedback on the colours are positive (I like it but very biased), this palette will be used on all future Swallow-liveried releases, including the loco-hauled Mk3s, DVT, 86 and 87.

It is very reassuring to know you are at Dapol and are committed to improving the accuracy of their liveries. I really hope the future loco-hauled MK3s include another run of sleepers in InterCity  livery. There was no way I was spending a penny on the first run with all the issues they had, but I will certainly pick up both sleepers and regular loco-hauled MK3s when another run is done, knowing the livery should be accurate.

Same logic as the RR mk2s with no brake. Again I have an NsE one waiting the dip slowly....

One type that has not been covered at all with the MK2As is the BFK. It was common in the Waterloo-Exeter sets to have 2 x BFK back-to-back. Having a BFK would also allow InterCity / InterCity Charter to be done too, as well as various other liveries including Regional Railways and the ScotRail version of RR.

They did a white roof BCK but no FOs or Catering vehicles. The 37401 would be better than nothing mind. The cocktail stick would soon have it renumbered. I'm sitting on a large logo one (37418) which is soon to be dipped to become 37402 in 1993 IC Mainline. Whats the odds as soon as I peel of the last of the masking tape Barwell hey presto one into the announcements.....

From what I have read, that BCK was converted for staff use and had various interior modifications including bunks, a shower, etc. I purchased one recently for a bargain price. It seemed strange to release that without the matching stock it operated with.

    Well wishlist remains a wishlist

RF red stripe class 47 (no problem with 37s they churn out in that scheme)
GW 150 green class 47 (some one must want a Brunel/Churchward/Gooch/Great Western?)
RF red stripe class 31 (no doubt they will release another 37 in that scheme..)
Dutch class 31 (guess what class there is several in dutch..)
class 25/3 (reckon thats gonna be a real long wait..)

Luckily Dapol are ticking a few boxes with their announcements...  😁

A Dutch 31 would be hard to resist, as would a Dutch 47.

Still no Mainline 37/4 (The IC stripes not Freight company) Still no white roof FOs glass half full says money saved.....

I agree. I've been waiting a long time for one of those - and hopefully not 401 in the short-lived 'black numbers' variation. Something more representative would be great.

I've been researching the InterCity charter rakes today, so they are fresh in my mind. Some InterCity white roof MK1s (and MK2A BFK!) wouldn't go amiss and would go rather nicely with a Mainline 37/4.

  11. With the Dapol 87 on the way and 86s already existing, it would be nice to be able to model the often double-headed limestone trains on the WCML that used PTAs. The livery looks to be a mix of plain as well as former British steel, although I am prepared to be corrected on that:

  12. Great news and a good sign that Dapol is still committed to N.

As far as west coast electrics go, I managed to resist the initial Farish 90s in order to wait for the InterCity Mainline livery variant. Let's see whether I can do the same here, as the 87 in the twin pack was a more obscure/experimental version of the livery. I may still take the Swallow version initially, though, but hope for a Mainline version later if not in the initial batch. I also have the Mainline 86, of course.

  13. Yes. Graham Farish offer MK2/MK2A in N gauge, although they do not release them often enough and the more common types such as TSOs tend to sell out very quickly.

This has been a source of frustration for many people for a several years now, however the recent release of numerous MK1s and MK2 aircons might bode well for Farish actually releasing some further MK2/MK2A coaches in the next few months.

It is also worth noting that Accurascale recently published a survey to see what interest there was in N, and a lot of people responded that they would like to see MK2 coaches - particularly MK2B/C since they are simply not available in N.

The only rebranded NSE Mk1's I can recall were some where the blue was replaced by Intercity Executive Dark Grey for some reason.

I read that from you elsewhere a few weeks ago. That's quite intriguing. Do you happen to know of any photos or videos for reference?

@frobisher Hence the "d" part being in quotation marks. I certainly don't reasonably expect to see Farish doing subclasses beyond the non-AC/AC distinction any time in the foreseeable future. If the only alternative is dredging ebay for the ancient printed side coaches, when everything else for a push-pull rake exists in relatively recent form, I can't imagine the average modeller being stubborn enough to turn down a brand new offering over nitpicks.

There aren't sliding door toolings for Dapol's MK3s either but that didn't stop KMS Railtech commissioning the Inter7city sets.

If Accurascale are looking at the potential for covering MK2B/C in N, maybe they'll consider the D as well.

Whilst yourself and no doubt numerous other modellers wouldn't mind a MK2F masquerading as a D, I suspect there would also be as many that would not be happy with the compromise. I was just about ready to customise a MK2F in InterCity livery to one that was on the Waterloo-Exeter in the early 1990s with InterCity branding removed and a NSE logo next to the number, until I realised disappointingly that it was a D!
