  1. Two new locos just completed for Hembourne, a 645 pannier and a 517, both from SE Finecast kits.
  2. Just completed the SE Finecast kit of the long wheelbase 517. I hope you find the pictures of interest.
  3. Final details and weathering added including lamps, fire irons, loco crew and storm sheet. Happy with the result.
  4. Decided to take the plunge using Worsley Works etched sides for a D16 brake third in 4mm scale. Currently looking to source the other parts required for the build. If anyone is interested in a set of D16 etches then please pm me as they may be able to be done as a batch at the end of January. Cheers Paul
  5. Painted and lettered. Just weathering and final details such as crew and lamps to add.
  6. After a long break things are finally coming together and the chassis is complete and the body in primer.
  7. Unbelievably it is 4 years since my last post of this thread and the loco has remained part finished in a drawer since then, up to last week that was. With the latest lockdown and the nights drawing in it was time to see if I now had the skill and enthusiasm to actually finish this loco kit. It is a Martin Finney kit purchased after Martin retired but before Brassmasters took over supply. It came from EBay as a GWR City without any instructions. It will eventually now become a Flower class. The body was essentially complete except except for the cab detail so that was the first job. A coat of etch primer and I can see where I need to work on improving the finish. The chassis has had the outside frames fitted and you can see how the design of a double frame 4-4-0 really works. I have Gibson wheels so I will need to modify the axles slightly to take the fly cranks as they are a more scale size than the Gibson ones. The tender is nearly finished so will receive a coat of primer soon then I shall start making the brake gear. An excellent kit but not a quick one to build.
  8. That’s looks really impressive and you would never know how it was made. Technology has come a long way since I started modelling 40 years ago.
  9. My concerns with 3d printing are my ability to make the CAD, although I can do 2D, and the definition of the 3D print. From what I have seen you can still see the lines and something as complex as a coach side may be difficult to smooth out. I stand to be corrected mind.
  10. Dear all, I am looking to to build a GWR D16 brake third coach for my EM gauge layout, Hembourne, as depicted in the corner of the attached photo behind the 58xx tank. It is 48’ 6” 6 compartment low roof with Dean 8’ 6” bogies. Unfortunately there is no kit available so I have come up with a few options and would like to canvass feedback of members experience and preferences. My considerations are price, accuracy and how easy it will be to scratch build. My options appear to be as follows: 1. kit bashed from Ratio 4 wheel brake 3rd and all 3rd, with metal bogies and added underframe detail. This may be the easiest option if I can manage the cut and shut process ok. 2. Scratchbuilt from plasticard. I have a copy of the excellent book by David Jenkinson on building coaches by this method, it will be very cost effective if I can get the accuracy right. Again metal bogies and underframe detail. 3. Etched brass sides and brass underframe with metal bogies. Unfortunately no one is listing D16 sides but Worsley Works may be able to produce and I may need to modify an existing underframe kit. Potentially this would be the most accurate option but would be the highest cost. Currently I am leaning towards option 3. So far I have built a T20 4 wheel coach using Ratio parts, a few etched brass kits, but only ever buildings in plasticard. If you can share your thoughts and provide any advice that would be fantastic. Regards Paul
  11. Coming back to the layout after 6 months and starting to prepare for its next outing in April at the Narrow Gauge Show in Eastleigh ( it is the token standard gauge layout). Starting with a look look at the stock and some minor improvements. First up another attempt to get the GWR coach roofs looking realistic in their weathered white. I have used AK Interactive pigment fixer with white, black and dark earth pigments, applied both wet and dry in various coats. Next up is the finish the build on a 4 wheel all third for the branch train to go with the 3rd brake and 1st/3rd composite.
  12. Amanda, The card is scribed for planking or bricks and painted with enamels for the base coat and acrylics for the brickwork colours. I have not used any brick papers. The stonework is embossed plasticard stuck onto the card and painted with enamels. Paul
  13. Starting to work my way through a list of additional details and improvements to the layout before it’s next outing, starting with telegraph wires. These are made from EZ line in fine black. It stretches so won’t break or damage the telegraph poles. Not so easy to fit but another little detail. For the record Hembourne will be appearing at the following shows in 2020. 18th April 20 Eastleigh 16/17th May 20 Salisbury 24th Oct 20 Newbury
  14. Just back from my first 2 day show with Hembourne at the Moors Valley Railway Model Railway weekend. Once again I have a snagging list. Replace gearbox on 57xx with High Level gearbox Replace permanent magnets with electro magnets, more reliable and authentic operation Make new wooden trestles, lighter and height adjustable finish updated stock, new 517, 58xx and a couple more coaches. Next exhibition should be April 2020, watch this space.
  15. Hembourne will be at the Moors Valley Railway open weekend and model show this coming weekend. It will be on display in the coach shed along with a number of other layouts.
  16. Just finished an original Wills Metro after 30 years. A very nice kit.
  17. First stages of a D7 clerestory coach cut and shut from two Triang brake 3rd coaches and running on Shapeways 3d printed bogies.
  18. Not at all. The fiddle yard got almost as much viewing as the layout.
  19. Well, made it through the first exhibition for Helbourne without any major issues. Despite loading the car in the rain this morning made it to the show and setup without getting the layout too wet. Running was fine except for one loco that had issues with dropping out of mesh, and the fact the couplings were troublesome as the layout was on a sloping floor and I did not bring enough packing to level it off. Got a few good comments and a couple of potential show invites, and perhaps an article in MRJ. Big thanks to everyone at the Warminster show and those that helped me pack the layout away before the rain came. Overall a happy day.
  20. Correct. Go to the Railex link in the exhibitions area and you should find some pics there.
  21. 1st was Newton Heath Works, 2nd was Midland in Bristol. All finalists were excellent mind. My favourite was Bottom Works Sidings bit I see what the winner was chosen.
  22. With just over 2 weeks to go until the first show starting to add a few finishing touches.
  23. Setting the coupling heights on the wagons with a simple jig. Hopefully I have enough working locos to see me through the layouts first exhibition.
