Is that a home made smokebox numberplate... that run must have story somewhere judging by the date

The numberplate does look homemade, not uncommon in the latter days of BR steam.

The story I heard was that it was planned to attach 73050 to a Manchester - Peterborough train, however no suitable train was available so BR reluctantly decided to steam it up and run it down to Peterborough in secret under the cover of darkness...

For me, I prefer Acrylics mostly because of the reasons listed above.  For airbrushing add a few drops of paint retarder, I have some from Tamiya and Vallejo, to stop the paint from drying in the nozzle.  I also have a considerable collection of Humbrol enamels which are decades old now but mostly still viable.

I would add that Humbrol acrylics are also good.  I haven't seen Humbrol enamels for quite some time.  The proprietor of the last actual model shop in Montreal told me that only stockists of Hornby could get Humbrol.  Doesn't make any sense but there you are.  That shop shut down a couple of years ago.  I can get most of my modelling supplies from an online shop in Toronto and they are really good.

For authentic (as far as I know) Humbrol acrylic British railway colours, there is an online shop here specializing in British that is also quite good.

Sunward Hobbies in Toronto carry a full line of Humbrol enamels (and no Hornby!).

As far as I know Humbrol railway acrylics have been discontinued and will only be available while stocks last.

The loco and coach go together quite well but the valve gear is a bit difficult, there's very little metal around the holes in the rods. Also be aware that these railmotors had a corridor connection on the end for most of their lives - no mention of this in the kit as far as I recall.

Thanks for the tips Mike. What is holding me up is how to motorise the unit. I had thought about modifying a High Level Pug chassis, however I am in Canada and High Level are currently not doing export orders. The other option was a motor bogie for the trailer which are also difficult to source.

    Cheers!

  4. I would like to replace the disk bogie wheelsets on an HO CP 4-6-0 with spoked wheels.

The existing bogie wheels are 8mm diameter but I think I could fit 9mm without modification.

The chassis is being used for a Sri Lankan B1 Class 4-6-0 loco which had spoked bogie wheels.

I have checked most of the on-line UK and NA suppliers I am familiar with but cannot find anything suitable in stock.

Any assistance by RMweb members is appreciated.

Note, I am located in Canada so a supplier that has a website and is willing to ship overseas is preferred.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

If it would help, I have an unmade David Andrews A2 which has a nice drawing of the mvr bits and the cover off the boiler top.

I can photograph it and send it you if you PM me an email address.

If it helps I can also photograph and measure the bits, although they are to 7mm scale, so would need scaling by 7:4.

I can also send you two decent photos of mvr fitted locos, side views.

    Let me know.

Thank you Jeff, I will PM you.

You'd need a double chimney and different dome too?

I'd have thought those would be readily available, whereas the multiple valve regulator and associated fittings on the boiler wouldn't be hard to replicate using wire, tubing, plate and platicard.

The DJH kit includes the double chimney and correct dome for this version.

I have no problem making the parts myself however I have not been able to find clear enough photos or drawings of the parts on-line.

    Cheers,

    Steve

  7. I have started building a DJH Peppercorn A2 kit and have discovered that it does not cater for the 5 locos that were fitted with multiple valve regulators.

These are the ones with the large box behind the chimney and the associated linkages along the right hand side of the boiler.

Are there any suppliers of these fittings in 1:76 scale?

    Thanks in advance,

  8. I closely inspected the right hand nameplate of Sir Nigel at Aberdeen station in 1965 and can confirm the letters and border were stainless steel and all attached to the backing plate with flat head (countersunk) screws. Most of the black paint had disappeared from the backing plate. You had to be fairly close to see that this was not a cast plate.

I had always been interested in nameplates and had examined others when I got the chance and this was the first time had seen a fabricated nameplate.

Excellent service considering I live in Canada!

    Excellent quality too!

    Thank you Railtec.

Kernow is Tier 1, so that gives you an idea of the situation. I pre-ordered through my "nearly local" supplier here in Canada, as he get's Hornby product through the US distributor and was able to secure what I wanted.

Interesting, how can I get in touch with this Canadian supplier?

    Thanks in advance,

Any chance of a photo. Would be good to see the corrected front bogie and buffer.

Has the tender spring clasp been added, and any change to the lighting function.

I have one of the 2nd run on order but not heard a thing.

    As requested...

Only imperfection is an upward bow in the right side footplating - looks like it could easily be corrected.Running on DC - Lighting - in forward direction white lights at the front are on, red lights are off and

red lights on the tender on. In reverse red lights at the front on, white lights are off.

I am not sure what you mean by "tender spring clasp" - it has an 8 pin plug for electrics integrated with a plastic clip thingy for a coupling which came apart fairly easily.

Just had notification from KR that the 2nd run GT3s have arrived at the UK warehouse and processing for dispatch to UK and overseas customers is to commence shortly. UK orders will be sent by Royal Mail.

Mine arrived in southern Ontario this afternoon.

    It looks great!

    Hello Mike,

I am currently building Arthur's D20 kit and was wondering how you have attached the bogie as I can see no mention of this in the instructions?

Also how did you do the pickups?

I am impressed by how clean and shiny you keep your work!

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello Mike,

I have now worked out how to attach the bogie but would still like to know how you tackled the pickups on the D20.

    Thanks in advance,

    You want this: https://www.tichytraingroup.com/Shop/tabid/91/c/n_wire/p/1101-010-phosphor-bronze-wire/Default.aspx

Nickel silver is nice for handrails because its stiff. Its bad for pickups for the same reason. Brass tarnishes too quickly. Phosphor bronze is the best option, and what most RTR models use for the same reasons.

Thanks for the link - it looks like a useful site I was not aware of that has phosphor bronze wire from .008" up to .040".

  15. I use 145 degree solder from Eileen's for metal gear boxes and kits but I do not know if Eileen's can ship flux overseas.

I have obtained flux from Gaugemaster - both their non-acid safety flux and also the DCC concepts Sapphire Safety Flux.

British Model Trains in Cambridge, Ontario also used to stock these products.

For electrical connections, a resin core wire flux should be used. I found a lower melting point type for sensitive computer type applications a long time ago and use that. Sorry I cannot recall where I purchased it.
