RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted June 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2020 It would appear I spoke too soon! After invoking CombineZP to run a thorough align, followed by an all methods stack, I've managed to get a good image of 5532 on its run around
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted June 29, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2020 Another focus stack. Not as good as yesterdays as the loco isn't as sharp. Also I'm using a different monitor, so may have mis-adjusted the brightness and contrast on this one. I also need to paint those chimney pots! 11
RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted June 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2020 Hi Chris (and interested followers), There's a wonderful group on Facebook called "Everything Great Western". Lots of ex BR(WR) staff are on there, including Adrian Vaughan, and they post photos - many from their own private collections, I think. Over the past week a guy called Derek King has posted photos of the Tetbury branch. I get the impression he used to work on the line because he's able to name members of staff in the photos. Could be a great source for you! It's a private group so you have to ask to join.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted June 30, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 30, 2020 I tend not to take many photos of the railcar as operationally its a bit basic, however I decided to give it a run the other day.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 1, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 1, 2020 Whilst the point rodding by the shed looked just about acceptable when viewed from the hill, when taking photos, it looked awful! I’ve tried to sort it out last night but it’s been a real pain. Ive given up for tonight, so the left hand side has been lifted and I’ll relay when I’ve got a bit more patience. 3

Now the second pack of rodding has arrived, I’ve been fitting the rodding to the other crossover. Brilliant job on Tetbury, I have been a casual follower of your progress. As a kid I remember visiting Tetbury by train from Stroud, however it was quicker by bus. At the moment I'm fitting Wills point rodding to a couple of new boards and I am of the impression that the point lock needs a separate rod to operate it and not as you have shown it. I don't know if I am correct but if your interpretation is correct I can save myself a lot of time. Perhaps more qualified members could advise. A photo of point locking at Winchcombe is attached. RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 1, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 1, 2020 (edited) I used the below thread, and the limitations of the Wills kits, to try to represent an economical FPL using the diagram on page 2 of the thread. I had originally followed the two lever approach as found on the ground frame at Broadway, but we know Tetbury ran it from two black levers in a frame. Perhaps the thread below could help? By the way, the rodding has been known to turn the air blue, so once I’ve tidied the rodding by the engine shed, it’s staying as it is! RMweb Gold tarifa Posted July 1, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 1, 2020 I agree about the colour of the air. The Wills kit must be the fiddliest I have built needing the patience of Jove. I have been striving to make the rodding look the part and in an effort to simplify the work I am mounting the rodding on thin styrene sheet and it helps with the curved sections. Thanks for the heads up regarding the economical FPL, interesting thread on point rodding . I think I will use that installation. Looking forward to your progress. RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 2, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2020 With zen like patience, I finished off the point rodding by the engine shed. I was after a gentle curve rather than the slightly abrupt junction I've ended up with, but it'll do. Hopefully you'll agree that it looks a lot tidier than the other day! 16
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 3, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 3, 2020 How about something a bit more scenic today? Apparently, if someone was seen at the top of the hill, the guard would hold the train. However this chap seems a little dejected, so perhaps its just left?
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 4, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 4, 2020 There are some interesting recollections of the old railway in this video produced by the Tetbury Goods Shed. As well as some photographs I haven't seen before, it includes some interviews with Stephen Randolph who wrote the book on the line which I've been using as a reference for the layout:
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 5, 2020 After watching the beautiful layouts represented at the World of Railways Virtual Exhibition yesterday, I couldn't resist having a quick running session of my own!
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 6, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 6, 2020 When I purchased the coal dray, I thought another in front of the goods shed would look good. So over the past week I’ve been assembling this: I haven’t affixed it in position just yet, but this is where I thought it would go.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 7, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2020 I thought I'd try recreating the Doubleday photo to see how close the model is. This is the best angle I can run a focus stack on: I have a loading gauge being assembled on the work bench and need to fit the fire devil from my bits box. Not too sure why the station building has tilted forwards, better get that looked at. 13
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted July 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2020 Great shot, with a real sense of distance. I've enjoyed watching Tetbury develop over the years, it's good to see the results of all your work now coming out in excellent shots like this. 1 2
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 8, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 8, 2020 I found the old fire devil that I had made up years ago from a Ratio water crane kit: Looking at the reference photos, it needs some slight adaptation, but it’ll do until I’ve got rid of the gap around the base of the building! https://rcts.zenfolio.com/buildings-and-infrastructure/sheds/ha0e5ff0d https://rcts.zenfolio.com/buildings-and-infrastructure/sheds/hA0E5FF44 I also came across this excellent painting by Don Breckon which I found on Flickr titled “Visitors to the Shed”:
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2020 After the running session at the weekend, I was a bit frustrated with the running of one of the Hattons 14xx and decided to do something about it. Even with clean track, clean wheels and a CV adjustment, the Hand of God was still used to prod. So I thought a stay alive might be worth a go. It’s an ESU chip, so an ESU PowerPack was used. Firstly it was soldered on to check it actually improved the running. It resulted in a huge improvement. No stalling, slow running and no hesitation in sound. Theres only one place where the capacitor can go, and that’s the cab! A hole was drilled in the cab floor and threaded into the smoke box via a splasher and past the motor housing Hopefully you’ll agree that it’s an improvement. 10 1
RMweb Gold checkrail Posted July 9, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 9, 2020 Lovely video. Shows all your work coming together nicely. And nowt wrong with that 14xx now. 2
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) Whilst I like a good focus stack, I’ve found that it doesn’t work for photographing cameos of figures. They always seem to find a way of falling out of focus. This one was taken with the more usual iPhone technique of snap it and hope. RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 13, 2020 (edited) With the stay alive now fitted to the 14xx, the locos now become almost a joy to run! Given how good this one is running, I've invested in a Youchoos 14xx on a 6 pin direct plugin Zimo chip, as I've heard it just about fits. I'll post a bit more on that one when it arrives. The work on the layout over the weekend has been a bit limited to filling gaps at the bottom of buildings to stop them from appearing to float. That still needs tidying up before I post any photos on here, as it still appeared a bit thick in places. RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 14, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 14, 2020 Sound decoder fitted to the other 14xx, and after a bit of adjustment with the settings, it seems to be running well. The decoder was adjusted to match the settings found here: However the loco was still running rough, especially at slow speeds. After taking it apart so many times, I knew there wasn't any capacitors within the loco. A quick google search led me to the Youchoos page which alluded to changing cv56 and 58 https://www.youchoos.co.uk/Index-QuickHelps.php?L1=TroubleshootMotor By turning CV56 down to 150, and making sure CV58 is at 255, the loco now runs like this: Certainly sounds good to me, and in my opinion better than the Howes decoder. Also, the chip just about fits so if there is an issue, it can be dealt with by a simply swap with only soldering to the speakers. However I may also fit this with a stay alive capacitor as these diminutive engines do seem overly sensitive and this one still needed the occasional prod.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2020 Over the weekend I was busy trying to get rid of the floating buildings. Using strips of static grass and some left over coarse flock used for making trees, the gaps have been filled. However because the grass flock had some dark green mixed in with it, some of the areas still look like gaps! I also thought that by packing out the voids, the station building would sit more upright, however it still seems to be tipping forwards!

RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted July 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2020 (edited) I decided that 5819 was looking too clean, so it’s been given the weathering treatment. Anyone for a game of spot the difference? Whilst factory weathering of 1474 is convenient out of the box (and saves on the mess) I do like the individuality and satisfaction that a personal weathering project brings. Still some finishing touches to do like repairing damaged lamps. I also realised that I have a set of etched number plates for this pair. I’ll save that for the weekend.
