Brighton MRC built a model of Volk's, in 7mm scale, in 1983 to celebrate the line's centenary. It was a lovely model (although not the most exciting layout to operate...). I think it went to Hove Museum after the club finished with it but after that I've no idea. @acg5324 of this parish might know more.

Like you said wasn't that exciting! Isn't a trilling ride on the real thing come to think of it. Was always shivering for the entire trip! What was exciting was taking the train from London road to Falmer on the Lewes line as teenagers, to go to gigs at the university. I don't think we ever purchased tickets! We exhibited Volk's in Eastbourne just before Christmas 1983. On the Sunday I was extremely hung over after a big night at the rugby club, so I rigged up some temporary wires to control the points at Aquarium and Black Rock remotely. That let me run the whole thing single-handed without moving from my chair. London Road eh? You will, of course, be aware that London Road station has been Brighton MRC's HQ for almost 50 years. http://www.brightonmrc.co.uk/

Born in Norf Lunnon but, as did most people during a BR career, moved all over the place at frequent intervals. I worked in Brighton from 1983-85 (lived in Mile Oak, Portslade) and then, after changing employers, lived in Eastbourne for several years before heading overseas. When I built Goathland I had no idea at the time that it would morph into what it has and think despite my enthusiasm recon it might take another ten years to finish Grim-Up –North.(GUN for short). GUN is my attempt to amalgamate 4 Yorkshire based layouts into one super layout. Goathland has been extended by 5feet, had a repaint, new tress and signals installed since we moved. When we looked at this house I had a vision of the spider infested double garage becoming the ultimate modelers man cave. It has now been dubbed “The Warehouse” by Andy P. Rewired, insulated and dry-walled it is now home to Goathland, Queensbury and a loop that incorporates part of Bradford Exchange. I’m aware that I’m seen by some as a butterfly modeler but at the end of the day it’s all the same project. The idea is to be able to run trains from one place to another or if the mood takes’ just sit and watch the trains go round. Sometimes mojos can wane and although retired at an early age there are times when time simply doesn’t allow or energy fades. Modeling is my passion and I like a challenge, some models involve an enormous amount of work and when it all finally comes to fruition should form a very enjoyable layout. This first post needs some pictures on it so enough with the waffling on and here are some of the models and some of the layouts. Below I have retained my original post. So the shopping is now almost over. The only things of much use from the local model shop are basic materials such as scenic`s, plasticard and paint. A full scale plan has been drawn up and a new blade waits in the jigsaw. The scenery around Goathland lends itself to open plan base boards and having purchased two thick insulation sheets months ago there`s no turning back! As with Dunster (my last layout) all the structures have been completed over the winter months including a curved viaduct. I should mention at this point that half this layout will be fictitious and that it is scheduled to appear at the model railroad show in Medford Oregon during November. The design will include; Continuous running The fiddle yard from Dunster, with modifications Reversibility, 180 degrees to be viewed at home from the operating well or the front at exhibitions Plug and play base board connections Infra red remote control of points Gradients Code 100 track, with electrofrog pointwork. Working signals Full lighting Comments more than welcome. Regards Shaun Hi Shaun I've just stumbled across this excellent thread, and was really impressed by your curved viaduct - have you explained how you built? Of not, can you share the secrets? Of not, can you share the secrets? Peter Hi Peter Thank you for your kind comments and welcome to the thread. The viaduct on the fictitious half of the layout was tricky in that it has a gradient and curve. When my wife and i built Goathland it was intended as an exhibition layout which I could assemble back to front at the shows. This meant that the gradient on the station half had to come back down and meet the fiddle yard exit curve at the exact same point too! I drew everything out out full scale on a sheet of 6mm MDF first. Layout incorporates open frame construction and the viaduct has its own bed set into the frames. The wedge shaped piers are made up from ply and were placed onto the bed. Back and front were clamped to the piers for marking up before cutting out. Each one was numbered up and the whole thing glued and clamped together until dry and the track bed was added. It was then placed on the bed and the scenery built up around it using thick insulation foam sheet. I glued embossed brick sheets on with contact adhesive and painted it before fixing it in its place on the layout. The famous pic. I've since repainted it and took a few more pictures just now featuring a NE Q6 with coal hoppers and NER brake. Queensbury's 3 arch viaduct is made with the same approach but from scribed foam board. Two more are planned for Grim-up-North. One of which will be taller and longer set in front of the other smaller one, more of a railway over the arches with bridges sort of affair. RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted October 26, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 26, 2020 Just some more ballasting this week. After I finished spreading the ballast on Queensbury, some heavy equipment was brought in to power my old airbrush. PVA, warm water and a couple of drops of washing up liquid were mixed and sprayed over the ballast. The addition of ballast magic to the fine ballast wasn't quite enough to hold it down hard but definitely stopped it blowing about when the glue mixture was applied. When I find my Peco track rubber I'll get the trains running again. With plenty of spare ballast and magic left, I got that down on the Bradford section too! Another shot of Brow lane rail over bridge! Hope you're all keeping out of trouble, Shaun 10

RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted October 30, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 30, 2020 Had a rather messy day today. After getting up on the roof and sweeping the chimney this morning I got to work on some permanent way. Any stray ballast was poked or rubbed loose, vacuumed up, collected and sieved into a container for future use. My old track colour acrylic that was mixed up 8 years ago had gone a bit lumpy. Fortunately I was able to filter it through a folded piece of mosquito screen into the airbrush jar. Messy business! To this was added about 5% 2-Butoxy Ethanol and some more water. After a good shake it was ready for the airbrush. I ended up using two jars and hardly had any problems with flow. The results look great. A little heavy perhaps but tones and dulls everything down perfectly. Comparison with this picture to the one I posted on Sunday, shows that any uneven ballast has all but disappeared. The technique is to aim at the rails sides one side at a time which covers everything! Looks like I need to source a new Peco track rubber before I can get the trains running again and the point blades will need a bit of attention with a fiberglass pencil. Platforms next! Tonight's train. Yet another N2 with kit built 51' teak suburbans. Regards To All Squatch. 10 1
