Jon,

1917 Belgian pent roof van bodyshells? OO Gauge? Where can one buy these from?

Jonathan,

Thank you, I am going to see if anyone on Shapeways want to do them as I need a few and have never scratch built a wagon before. Do you know if anyone makes the 12 ton van in the image? I have looked at various websites and can't find it, but being a neophyte Australian I am very very limited in knowledge of pre-grouping wagons and the British hobby market. If no one makes them I will see try for a Shapeways build.

Thanks for the tips and help.

Cheers,

Chris

The 12 ton van isn't done anywhere as far as I know - I have it in mind for a future build myself. With the caboose they're a very odd looking thing as the top sticks up above the roofline in a most un-British way. They seem to have gone out of traffic fairly quickly after the start of the ferry boat services so they aren't really appropriate for the layouts I'm building stock for at the moment.

If you do go the route of having one made, can I suggest you look at having the caboose (brakeman's hutch) as a separate piece you can add on to the basic body? That would give you both variants of both vans.

Jonathan,

I will include that in my query to a CAM maker.

I am just looking at the Historical Model Railway Societies website and have found the following drawings:

I scratchbuilt and home cast a batch, you can see one here

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/58076-ferry-vans-from-scratch/?p=721540

3rd photo down, I think I have a few left but they probably aren't perfect - the roof corners are a bit prone to bubbles and getting broken, but if you wanted then at £5 plus postage it might be possible - i'm away at the moment so cannot survey the castings.

Jonathan W has built a few  of these from my castings, backdating to suit  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/892-west-end-workbench/?p=105956

send me a pm

Jon

This one is from The Engineer, Dec 12, 1919, pages 581 and 590 regarding the work of the Gorton and Dunkinfield Workshops of the Great Central Railway where 3267 10 ton wagons were converted for use overseas. The magazine states:

The company adapted, by affixing screw couplings and other fittings suitable for continental use, 2767 10-ton wagons, and a further 500 wagons, similarly adapted, were fitted with hinge tops-as shown in figure 88, page 590. These wagons were used overseas for conveying ammunition. Thirty-five goods brakes with a tare of 11 tons 11 cwt., were built for use in Egypt.

Clearly wandered away from my "not taken from UK railways" objective!

Cheers,

Chris
