RhB Om workbench, (and layout eventually)

I’ve been acquiring 1/45 Om from Fama, Utz, Alpinline and Bemo for about 8 years now for a planned future layout in the next 10ish years ;)

The older Fama & Utz stock is pretty basic although the range and detail increased under Roco and Alpinline’s ownership.

So to start here’s the original Fama flat wagon that I’ve detailed up ready for a log load.

The RhB stake wagons only have six stanchions on each side so I chopped off the middle 5 and repositioned them.

I also turned the stakes through 90° as they better represent the RhB style that way. The girders have been added with 4mm Evergreen strip.

The finished article is then decked with coffee stirrers. It’s not finescale like Bemo’s stock but it looks the part to me.

I still need to replace the couplings with kadees and reprofile the wheels for finescale track.

Another addition to the collection for the layout. I’d acquired the Citaro a while back and it’s a bit big for the small station I’m hoping to model especially as it’s 1/43 compared to the Om 1/45 scale. Last week I found this older 1978 1/50 Saurer that lasted right up to the end of the 90’s when the Citaro’s etc replaced them. Both fit the late 90’s to early 2000’s timescale I’ve chosen plus the Saurer buses have been kept by a few tour companies and enthusiasts so still appear today. The slightly smaller scale will work with a bit of forced perspective too.

It is a thing of exquisite detail but a few bits had fallen off the bogies! ;) the solid plate doesn’t retain the bogies so the guard irons and sand pipes on the outer ends got knocked off. Nothing broken apart from the glue so easy to fix. I’m going to email Bemo and suggest soft packing between the bottom and plate to stop the bogies swinging forward.

You can certainly see where the money went but I won’t be buying a fleet :laugh_mini:

No doubt some would be offended by the bits falling off but as they are invisible unless it’s upside down I did consider not putting them back on ;)

It truly is museum quality and I really can’t see a difference comparing to the brass ones three times as much. Like the wagons I could happily live with a budget version where they lost the hidden detail but that’s not going to be viable commercially and it is nice to see. Will have to fit sound next.

The Om collection steadily grows, this is what’s colloquially known as ‘rocking horse p . . ‘ ;)

While the table was clear I mocked up what it would look like on a 2ft wide baseboard . .

That has definite possibilities.

So  - if I print the station 193% this time - you would be happy? :)

Very!  I’d guess it’s a bit beyond your print table to be honest ;) it will be a scratchbuild of Wiesen and this is just a size test. I’m tempted to build one board to try things out and it can act as a test and display. As I have invites for the Harz for a few years yet this is probably at least 5 years away as a layout build. It would be nice though to get the buildings and other bits done so the actual build can be fast.
I’ve been collecting stock slowly for 9 years now and have enough to run the layout although I do fancy a second 4/4ii and Bemo just announced 627 ;)

My usual lack of focus when there’s no deadline means I’ve been bouncing between repairs for friends, On30 and then a third cement wagon arrived to spur the Om back into action. I’m telling myself that’s enough cement wagons now ;)

So I turned my attention to a couple of undecorated Alpinline Haik bogie vans in the cupboard.
They’ve been stripped down to component parts to refurb the one that had been modified and painted in the base colours.

RhB Om transfer fail

I’m picking pre 2005 liveries as the timescale I’ve chosen is 1995-2005.

The RhB stock dvds from Tram-tv provided the artwork which has been recoloured correctly and the wagon details erased to make large transfer artwork. Hopefully this will work on home decal paper, ;)

The older van had plastic wheels so I experimented with turning down the flanges in the dremel with a file. I then regauged and tested them through a Ferro/Bemo point. Seems to have worked :)

I’m fitting body mounted kadees to the stock to match the Bemo stuff. I needed to establish the minimum radius so set up a test board and screwed the track down to three radii.

After some testing I settled on a 3ft minimum as at 2ft6in the couplers were both at the limit of travel so there’s no room for dodgy track or dynamic loading (going too fast! ;) )

Built myself a railer out of 1.5mm plasticard to make getting stock on fast and easy without damage.
One of the disadvantages of Om being a bit niche ;)

The all in one transfer using an inkjet is a fail, you can see how blotchy it comes out with black on yellow no matter how I set the type of paper. It just runs into the yellow! The grey RhB branded van side came out a weird light blotchy grey too so I’ve scrapped that and I’m going to try single colour lettering on clear paper!

So back to doing it properly with paint!

I have had much fun with similar issue but when Office Depot went out of business, I got a Samsung Laser Colour printer, ex display for about £60. with 1200 dpi resolution it has a lot less of these issues than the inkjet - but expensive to run. I reserve it for decals and the odd bit of material that really needs high resolution - model signs etc. If you got the chance at that sort of price, a useful tool given the range of scales you work across!

The clear versions have worked better although there’s still been some runs so I think it’s the printer!
Enough good bits though so three costs of varnish now required.

When you run out of decal paper - try Lazertran, (for inkjet)  not sure how it works exactly - but it does without varnish. Let it dry for 30 minutes and then apply as any other waterslide.

Well lazertrans is out of stock everywhere so I’ll keep an eye out. Not that impressed with the 4Dmodels paper compared to the craftycomputerpaper I used before. As the Ccp stuff is no more I’ll try the lazertrans next time.
The result passes the 2ft rule and a definite improvement on unpainted plastic but not great close up. They’ll do for now.
