Why use the ali sheet ?

Update to my previous response. I thought I'd try dunking as I hadn't until now. The result;

On a diecast body more effective than the weapons grade trade only paint stripper I bought a few years ago and considerably less messy. It's cleanly removed all the paint if the dunked side in a few hours.

Back to the D1...

The gearbox with bearings is slightly wider than the frame spacer, if I file them down flush with the casing slightly narrower.

I know it is in the trailing wheel hole for the photo, I hadn't soldered bearings in them before changing plan with the motor. I had planned to solder horn blocks to the gearbox casing so could drop it in and out but there isn't room. I'm reluctant to trap the motor and GB in place given this is an experiment.

I'm thinking now about maybe screwing through the frame to the gearbox?

Another sporadic update. Still not the D1 but a weathering project I started before it. Now has handrails and crew added after stalling at 90% done.

My scale 16t'ers are packed away so posed with a 3 rail version for now.

This weekend I've been building a kit picked up at last week's Brighton model show. GWR 10T fitted open.

I was hoping to finish it to being ready for paint this weekend but I'm not quite there. Some brake rigging and the hoop to do.

Weather still too unpredictable to paint but found a Bachmann 08 I bought many years ago, I think second hand. After cleaning out the dried grease it runs again and I decided I wanted early logo and green so I would renumber.

Body is balanced on only as the retaining clips put up a fight while I was servicing it. The BR logo looks a little crude by modern standards.

Identity removed with the t-cut method. I also had a go at the panels as a part of light weathering. The Bachmann paint is rather a rough matt green. I will probably varnish after applying transfers so this will be lost but I will then do it again as it has worked quite well.

Inside of the cab painted and new number applied.

Glazing removed so I can varnish transfers on prior to weathering. It's a huge great scaffolding of moulded clear plastic so I'll try and find alternative to putting it all back.

Weathering applied across the body with chassis still to be done. Once chassis is done the body weathering will be refined to tie the two together.

Chassis weathering came out gloss so it has been sat waiting for painting weather to spray it back to matt since the last post. Who'd have thought that would be in September back in May!

Might get some fine attention at some point but for now I'm pleased with it.

After a prolonged absence the parkside kit is back. I was never happy with the buffers but picked up some MJT ones at Uckfield.

Ready for a wash and prime. I just have to remember what colour I was going to paint it!

Reading @Barclay's thread last week alerted me to more products from AK interactive. I've been using their weathering pencils for a few years but these are washes. Particularly I, at some point, want to give my quarry hunslets an oily wrag look to match pictures from near the end of their working life. It's different from the late BR look of neglect. They are clearly still cared for and given a quick wipe down but with dirt building up in the less easily cleaned areas.

Barclay pointed me towards the fresh oil.

So I found a victim in the scrap box. A suitably poorly weathered mainline coach. Someone has lobbed an air brush at it (more of which later).

Compress_20231104_155524_4699.jpg.a5a78e37b4d052f05311a0f5895fee7a.jpg

I added weathering pencils to a section before trying the wash.

Compress_20231104_155524_4272.jpg.164eb8b45ee917fa45571334cec58894.jpg

Wash applied by a small brush, a lightly loaded big brush would be better.

Compress_20231104_155525_5439.jpg.1462798fae01954b00ff6526260e19f2.jpg

It looks oily but has two issues;

1) the working time is short. If you go back on yourself you get a double thickness and increased emphasis on any brush marks.

2) it shows up all the surface imperfections. That air brushing? It all stood up like a rendered wall.

So I thought I'd try again and cleaned a section of the coach side of it's prior 'weathering'.

Compress_20231104_155524_4514.jpg.e24144b54ae14440cb7eba4e7cf2fba0.jpg

Then applied the wash without any pencil.

Compress_20231104_155523_3979.jpg.6f7aed7476546f22844afa9cf5bd5dd7.jpg

It does make it look oily. But you need to pre plan your brush strokes. You could air brush it but I think you'd end up with a gloss panel slightly browner than you started. The brushing gives the oily steaks. It can then be toned down with pencil. Wash on the grey is where I ran out of plan/time.

Next I think is to try it with thinners to see if it increases the working time and makes the streaks more manageable.

I hesitated in posting this. I decided to paint this wagon as a might have been 1948/49 overhaul. I also decided to 'yes, and' on it rather than fret about it not being quite what I wanted. At the moment it's not what I wanted but I'm contemplating the next 'and'.
