3d printed buildings

Recommended Posts

Its been a while since I have had any time to work on my project, that thing called work, and life tends to get in the way :)

so I have finished painting my signal box, and this time I have added guttering which has all been printed on my fdm printer so quite chuffed it managed such small details, since the software updates this little printer has being going from strength to strength, however I have taken the plunge and purchased on of those anycubic photon resin printers, the stuff folks are turning out on those printers is amazing, yet to set it up, as i am finishing these building prints, but after wards hope to print some rolling stock on the anycubic.

Updated Village Pub for my dads model railway, i have been experimenting with creating guttering and downpipes on my last 2 prints, I think it adds a lot, they are purposefully a little oversized than reality so they read better on the model. Yet to add the pub sign image, but hope to start building this all up into a little scene soon, though have one more building left to finish, and to retrofit guttering on all the other buildings!

Which FDM printer are you using? These look awesome!

Thanks Julia I'm using the Zortrax M200 its an old printer now in comparison to the latest fdm printers, and a bit pricey for what it is. I believe you can better results on the new Prusa which is half the price :)

Any chance of selling any prints .I dont have a machine but you models are superb.love the little warehouse with the chimmbly .

Thanks Friscopete.

I would love to start selling these buildings if possible, they come in kit form, but are really easy to paint as its a simple base coat, with a series of washes to help bring out the details in the model.

Also I have no idea what would be a reasonable price point for these models, they aren't hugely expensive in 3d material, just time to print them, so making a master version and learning to cast maybe the way forward with this to keep the cost down!

I may actually even sell the warehouse model I have above, as I am currently redesigning this building as an old brick Dairy with loading bay, and hope to have something ready in the next few weeks. So if I do sell it will happily ping you if you like.

Cheers

Rob

Rob,

there is a manufacturer of resin kits in Germany that may be roughly comparable with what you do.

HERE is a link to the website. Their prices are for the unpainted and unassembled resin casted kit. I think their prices are way too low, but this might give you an idea. They are quite successfull in Germany with their products.

Thanks for sending that over Michael that link is super useful and informative, much appreciated, especially as their stuff looks pretty good, and like you say very reasonable cost wise which I believe is quite important in order to try and sell a few of these kits or finished buildings. Which is why I am thinking of maybe looking into casting or possibly another option is sending them off to get printed/cast in China. I still have a bit of work to do on these models to get them finally ready, but currently they take a week of printing time for some of the larger models, which is why it wouldn't be viable to print them myself sadly!

Cheers

Rob

I've finished the 3D modeling of the replacement warehouse for my dads model railway. Loosely, and I mean loosely inspired on the old Salt Warehouse a Shardlow. Although I still quite like the idea of making this a Dairy/Creamery building with the opportunity to add some old horse and cart being unloaded out front with milk urns, with a couple of skiving chaps who have snuck off for a cheeky smoke !

I thought a brick facade warehouse/siding building would provide a bit of contrast to the majority of stone buildings I already have modeled for this scene. I'm looking forward to finally assembling this all on a removable base, and hopefully not making a pigs ear of it all. Its the first bit of modeling I will have attempted since I was in my teens.....

I have pushed some of the scale for various objects, mostly so they read better on the model I have found, sometimes I personally feel exact real world scale loses a lot of detail or interest so pushing tolerances very slightly makes for a more visually pleasing model!  Obviously I won't print it whole like this as I will run into all sorts of crazy errors, but have broken it into a series of sections/details to print. For instance the roofs will be printed separately along with the sliding doors, chimney caps, and guttering/drainpipes, and the two buildings have been split into two models in order to fit them onto my print bed.

Software used on this model 3ds Max, Z Brush, Meshmixer for preparing the print, and z suite for slicing the mesh ready for the printer.

And I expect this to probably take a good week of printing, all being well and hopefully minus any fails!

Quick update showing the first print of the new Dairy building, its had a wee bit of warping in a few minor places, though it can be sorted with some good old miliput :) but im going to switch PLA for future printing as I believe it to be more stable.

nice model, shows what 3D printing can do, but, please, please can we have proper brick bonds for the period, stretcher bond only came in in eary 20th century. Flemish bond would have more likely for a building of this period, and one advantage of 3D printing is that you can do it.

So I haven’t posted in the 3d printed section for a bit, mostly in the scenery section, but thought I would share an update showing my 3d printed efforts finally in situ! I need to start using my resin printer for the smaller detail pieces like the telegraph poles and gates, but i’ve been lazy and cracked these out on my fdm jobbo!  Next up is the village Church! 175F1B7B-3890-4343-8E2A-0D1A386AE22A.jpeg.02cd6befb20abbb854b8230417f9105f.jpeg8863CBBE-5C4A-42F3-9608-F32A2CB1036B.jpeg.9f14e3ec60df85216c6a475242f0660d.jpeg7731BB7D-9153-4679-BE32-B68E749FE946.jpeg.77d50d680c91fd96bf42ebf25798ee4a.jpeg

Having a backdrop of real trees and natural daylight really enhances the scene and shows your great work to good effect.

Thanks Alan, You can’t beat natural light for realism I agree, and having the garden in the background is a great backscene. Im thinking of investing in some daylight bulbs, building a proper light rig for future photography! Just have to work out how to get just as a good backscene now for my dads layout :)

I have finally finished the 3d model for the church, here is the model file rendered out of the 3d software, next just got to print, and paint it!  Though I suspect this will take some printing its quite a large building on the layout.... 74A1AE99-3F53-4BF4-AD13-3B8C4C0EDE75.jpeg.0055af53d685df38c34bf299e06643a6.jpeg3C25FE58-16F9-42BC-ACDC-CAE071BD9752.jpeg.c1e5d81f5b369a5b0bbc8ed6580c179a.jpegF74DE120-C4D8-4277-B873-C422B42DD2B7.jpeg.71f2ae0132ed7b23029dc75e18a25ab3.jpeg
