RMweb Gold Harry Posted September 14, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2019 Hi all, I am 95% of the way through a hand built OO-SF double slip needed for my slowly developing model of Swanage. What has been completed so far works well and stock flows freely through it. However, I have now come to a problem. As you can see from the photos below, everything has been finished apart from the smallest pieces of track (the obtuse crossing check rails - apologies if my terminology is wrong!) The basic problem is - there is no space to install the pieces with any chairs attached! Has anyone overcome this and could anyone suggest a solution? I have probably messed up the order and should have installed it earlier but bit too late now! Any help is much appreciated. This is the bit I can’t fit in!! RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted September 15, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 15, 2019 Yes they are obtuse check rails. Can you crop the 3 chairs back close to the rail and add a dab of super glue and do similar to the chairs for the check rail, it may not be pretty, but it should work, I had a similar situation with a tandem turnout. The difficult bit is ensuring there's enough chair left to grip the rail.
roythebus
As above, but for additional security solder a bit of scrap brass shim or wire underneath to hold them securely in place.
Darwinian
You could cheat and solder the ends to the inner running rail (not sure what the correct term is). when I built mine I used copperclad sleepers in some places and soldered to those. Be a bit of a pain for you to take sleepers out now.
hayfield
Sorry but owing to being away on holiday I missed this thread, Firstly I build up the centre of the obtuse crossings using 0.5 mm copperclad strip Double slip Once tested and working well I trim back the copperclad pads to the rail sides so chairs can be fitted Single slip Next I replace the temporary ply timbers with plastic ones Double slip Sorry for switching between single and double slips but found the photos quickly Exactoscale do a range of chairs for both slip and obtuse crossings, the above photo is the chairs for either a `1-7 or 1-8 slip, they also do a set of obtuse crossing chairs which will make either a 1-5,6,7 or 8 crossing, I have used these chairs for differing angles I have built turnouts in both EM & P4 (00SF is EM -2mm) gauges using this range and the chairs functually with just the V soldered up on plastic timbers, providing you use one of the standard crossing angles provided for I think diamonds and slips can be built using these chairs functionally. I would not do this using ply timbers owing the potential bonding issues between ply timbers and plastic chairs Exactoscale https://exactoscale.com/track-components/ Slip chairs 4CH 504A Obtuse crossing chairs 4CH503A On the build I also used Common crossing chairs 4CH 502A and check rail chairs 4CH 403A (modified) Hope this helps
Darwinian
That's a much better solution than mine Hayfield, why didn't I think to do that? I had to cut down a lot of half chairs to put on my copper-clad sleeper strip.
hayfield
Darwinian Its worth looking at the range of Exactoscale chairs, for turnouts, crossings and slips. If you use plastic timbers and standard size turnouts and crossings a lot of the chairs become functional. you could use the odd copper clad timber with the correct height spaces veery now or then, or ever use a brass chair, or as I have done make subassemblies. Once you get used to the chairs you can to a certain degree go "off piste " so to say and use on non standard sizes, 3 ways etc. But just get used to using them. And I am forgetting the best bit they look so much better than chopped up chairs. Look out for the new C&L 2 & 3 bolt chair sprues with the bridge and J chairs
