RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 12, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 12, 2020 (edited) Whilst waiting for a High Level gearbox for the K2/2 that I am building (Chris Gibbon of High Level Models is a friendly helpful chap) I thought I would dust down one of the first 4mm loco kits that I built. It was a "Little Engines" Q1 kit bought well before Hornby released their excellent version. As a novice I thought that given the exposed chassis on the Q1 I would utilise tender pick-ups and a minuture two pin connector. I should really have fitted stud pickups on the loco too but I didn't know about such things then. Anyway, I was amazed that after some cleaning the wee thing ran really well and so decided to finish painting/weathering and the result is not too bad. Lighting much closer - I need to take back the oil stains a bit. Quite a clean Q1 really! RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 13, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 13, 2020 Today's 0-6-0 is a C2X of the LBSCR built from a NU-CAST Partners kit. And a close up: Kind regards, Richard B
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 14, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 14, 2020 To continue with the 0-6-0 theme. I used a SEFinecast Q body and chassis kit to produce 30532. The finished model has some compromises due to a body designed for a Triang "Jinty" chassis but the SEF chassis kit does a great job bringing the model much closer to prototype. The "Q" class had a very long front overhang! Lastly the two "modern" SR 0-6-0's together. Kind regards, Richard B 4
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 15, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 15, 2020 (edited) At the other end of the scale is the Adams 0395 class 0-6-0. This is the first scratchbuilt loco constructed by me using J H Russell's excellent "A Pictorial Record of Southern Locomotives". It has a good scale drawing of the 0395 and I used this to mark out, cut and file all the various components. Took me back to my apprentice training school days at Eastleigh Works Training School now sadly long closed. Whilst Russell's book is a must for the SR Loco fan you do need to be careful! Mr Russell does get a bit confused sometimes, particularly with Urie's various 4-6-0 classes. I used one of Martin Finney's tender kits and did a little adaptation for the 0395. By the way, I thought Martin's Semley (up the road from me) layout in the latest Railway Modeller was superb! He must have a go at one of Mr Drummond's interesting 4-6-0s! I'm thinking about building the original 335 from scratch. Kind regards, Richard B Edited January 15, 2020 by 30368 3
5Bel
Hi Richard, Great work on the locos. Can I ask where you got the chimney for your Q class. I have a Wills body and want to produce a model in the BR era but the model has the original chimney at the moment. Cheers for now, Ian
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 18, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2020 Hi Ian. I recall a conversation with Dave at SE Finecast which resulted in the chimney. Either Dave supplied it or he put me in touch with someone who could! Sorry I can't be more specific. Many thanks for the comment, I think the Q and Q1 make a lovely couple! Sorry! RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 19, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2020 K2/2 seems to have got lost! Kind regards, Richard B

They do both the original and Lemaitre chimneys. http://www.pdkmodels.co.uk/ Jason
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted January 21, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 21, 2020 Thanks Jason, you are correct, that is where I got the chimney. PDK very helpful in my experience. Kind regards, Richard B
5Bel
Richard, Jason, Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. My Q is a long term project so it will be good to get all the bits in prior to starting. Thanks again, Ian
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted March 30, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30, 2020 (edited) Thought I might add a few more of my kit and scratch built ex SR loco's to this thread. Lets have a 4-4-0 series, the SR had lots of those! First up is a D1 built from a DJH kit with some additions. I have a DJH "L" 4-4-0 to build too. Next up is a T9 built from a Westward kit, one of my earlier efforts. And another T9, a £20 project bought from Alton Model shop many years ago. I think that it is an old Wills kit. Next is a mostly scratch built L12. Last of the 4-4-0s is Drummonds D15. Built from a PDK kit. The kit was bought by my wife for Christmas about 4 years ago. Anyone know of a good painter? Lastly we have H15 30491 which has a PDK chassis (built by PDK) and footplate/cab with a SEFinecast Urie taper boiler and modified Urie tender. Hope they are of interest. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted April 1, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 1, 2020 Next is a very old Wills N/U kit purchased second hand. It has a SEF chassis and a number of modifications incorporated so that I could build one of the low footplate re-builds of the "River" Class 2-6-4 tanks. RMweb Premium 30368 Posted April 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 9, 2020 A couple of my H15 4-6-0 fleet follows. 30489 was built and painted for me by PDK some 6 or so years ago and helped to kindle my obsession with the class. 30333 follows. This is a Urie rebuild of the Drummond F13 class. It has a longer wheelbase to accomodate the long firebox of the F13 boiler which was retained during the rebuild. PDK built the tender and body and I built the chassis. Kind regards, Richard B
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted May 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 6, 2020 I guess I should now add "Beattie" to the mix, just finished. Kind regards, Richard B 2
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted May 10, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 10, 2020 (edited) And now for something completely different! These locomotives have been responsible for many words forming many opinions about them but the brief time I had with a few drivers on the footplate at the end of steam on the SR (I had a footplate pass in 1965) suggests that they were never short of steam and that is what really matters to an engineman. This locomotive was the last to keep the original style of cab - PDK kit built by me about four years ago. It was converted to the wedge cab and painted green early in 1953. For all you LNER fans, thanks for the livery! I think it looks good on the MN. Kind regards, Richard B PS Something a bit smaller next time.
