I’m slowly building Rothley station opted for the Bachman model please forgive my sins, for not scratch building.

And will be needing  to model  embankments/ cuttings.  And was wondering what is the bast way to do this. When I was a kid framework chicken wire and either paper mesh-a Or plaster of parish was the main method.  polystyrene dose seems a easier choice to me. But was wondering if there’s a 3rd option. And dose the polystyrene need lair of anything on top before painting etc.

I have been slowly looking through this section of the forum I’m sure the question is on here somewhere but i keep getting distracted by all the topics on here.

Form the base out of balsa or anything else rigid enough but lightweight and easily shaped.  Then add the finer detail using plaster bandages such as Woodland Scenics and others produce.  If you are a fan of getting really messy you can make your own up using Plaster of Paris solution and plain gauze on a roll.

These pics may give you some ideas. First stage was to cut the outer/inner formers and tack on some fine mesh wire.

I then covered in Mod Roc bandage or similar and painted a dark brown.

Final element was to cover with static grass, before trimming down and adding bushes etc to provide interest. Areas without a back/front formers used very simple filler shapes covered in wire mesh.

I've used cereal box card cut into strips and interwoven then covered in kitchen roll with watered down pva slopped on, followed by a sloppy filler/pva mix then painted green. I've used static grass on mine but flock could be used too.

I mixed in some black poster paint with my filler mix.
