RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted June 3, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3, 2020 I would like to know what particular type of Class 37/(?) this is please. The photo was taken in May 1976. Thanks. Photo ctsy of Parkhouse/Lightmoor Press.
37038
It is a unrefurbished 37/0 - basically an as-built one. 1
Halvarras
I'm not an expert on Class 37s but I think the nose-end fittings (lower lamp bracket, two small bolts above the headcode box, lack of headboard brackets) would indicate one of the the higher-numbered ones, c.37239 to 37308. A pity it's not green, I reckon 37244 would have been the only candidate by then!

Flood
37246 to 37250, 37258, 37279, 37281, 37287 to 37302, 37307 & 37308 had additional lamp irons either side of the headcode box (also 37287 at no.2 end). 37283 had headboard clips. 37259 to 37268 had a centre lamp iron above the headcode box. So that leaves 37239 to 37245, 37251 to 37257, 37269 to 37278, 37280, 37282, 37284 to 37286 and 37303 to 37306. Just 33 locos to check! The precise position of the blue star multiple working codes might help to eliminate some others. A quick browse on Flickr rules out 37244 (still green in July 1976). cheers
Halvarras
Nice going Flood! Yours sincerely, A Class 37 non-expert (PS but I know why 37283 had headboard clips......!)
37114
Worth noting the loco in the picture has a couple of other hints to aid identification - the electrification warning flash is in poor condition The headcode glass frame is yellow, many were still the original silver So a few more to potentially rule out. 37240 - found a photo from August 76, position of the blue stars is slightly different but also the condition of the electrification warning flash. 37242 as above 37253 had silver headcode frame 37257 had additional lamp irons 37271 had only one electrification warning flash in May 1976 37272 had additional lamp irons 37273 had silver headcode frame 37277 had additional lamp irons 37278 had only 1 warning flash and a silver headcode frame 37285 only had 1 warning flash 37286 as above Only 22 left!
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted June 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2020 Again thanks to all. Such in-depth knowledge is always on here! I've now got to find a suitable model. All the 37/0s produced seem to be of the split headcode variety. I have a ViTrains, a Bachmann and a couple of Lima models (from my old 'Matford' modern image layout) but all would need 'converting' and re-painting, that's if any conversion items for the front end are indeed even available. Again any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted June 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2020 Depends how urgent your requirements are, personally I'd wait for Accurascale. Mike.

You will need to change the headcode display and remove the surplus high level headlight brackets but significantly easier than converting a split box to a centre box. The Bachmann model is a good starting point but you can go to town on them from a detailing point of view, alternatively wait a few years for the Accurascale one.
