Stratford's closure and plaque

Hi,

Given Stratford closed in 2001, why does the commemorative plaque for HS1 proclaim,

"Stratford Depot was here from 1839 to 2006 when it was the largest traincrew depot in Europe. The Eastern Counties and Great Eastern Railways built engines and trains on this site. The world record for the fastest build of a steam engine is still held by the Old Stratford Works, part of the depot, and stands at 9hr 47min. This plaque commemorates the thousands of railway workers who worked at Stratford Depot."

Interesting, where can the plaque be seen?

It's on the wall of the link span bridge at Stratford International station at the DLR station end - on the left side walking from the International station platforms - just before the exit doors.

As an aside, comparing on Old Maps the current layout of Westfield, the Stratford domestic station, International Station and the Olympic Park with the layout in the 50s and 60s is very interesting - the amount of railway land, sidings and buildings is extraordinary.

I have always found it disappointing that no one has produced a definitive guide/book to the works and depot. There are so many angles and settings that could be shown; perhaps one day someone will get around to it?

Whilst not a definitive guide, there was an OPC hardback on the subject of the depot and its locos some years back.

John.
