18B
Hi, Given Stratford closed in 2001, why does the commemorative plaque for HS1 proclaim, "Stratford Depot was here from 1839 to 2006 when it was the largest traincrew depot in Europe. The Eastern Counties and Great Eastern Railways built engines and trains on this site. The world record for the fastest build of a steam engine is still held by the Old Stratford Works, part of the depot, and stands at 9hr 47min. This plaque commemorates the thousands of railway workers who worked at Stratford Depot."
18B
I presume its because despite the depot building closing in 2001, the train crew depot possibly survived until 2006?
rob D2
Well they built the new EWS temple mills depot - presumably they also include that as Stratford as the replacement ? didnt last long though

RMweb Gold TravisM Posted August 9, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 9, 2020 Interesting, where can the plaque be seen?

It's on the wall of the link span bridge at Stratford International station at the DLR station end - on the left side walking from the International station platforms - just before the exit doors. As an aside, comparing on Old Maps the current layout of Westfield, the Stratford domestic station, International Station and the Olympic Park with the layout in the 50s and 60s is very interesting - the amount of railway land, sidings and buildings is extraordinary. RMweb Gold young37215 Posted August 10, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 10, 2020 (edited) I have always found it disappointing that no one has produced a definitive guide/book to the works and depot. There are so many angles and settings that could be shown; perhaps one day someone will get around to it? Edited May 2, 2021 by young37215

Whilst not a definitive guide, there was an OPC hardback on the subject of the depot and its locos some years back. John.
