Although not part of the original plan, we decided that there was room for a small quarry behind Chee Tor, that baseboard was added last year and the track set out, but then left. I decided it was time to get on with it, so over the last week for an hour or so each night I have pinned down the track and wired it up.20230530_194157.jpg.b15c439a1fedcd2e9006cd5bc4c66728.jpg

Now all I need to do is build a small control panel and it will be fully  operational and ready for some scenic work.

Is this part a layout within itself, Paul?

Yes it is, independently operated from the main layout but also an excuse to have some ICI bogie hoppers which in reality would not be seen at Millers Dale,  bit of modellers licence, after all the Peak District is noted for its quarries, isn't it.

Here is the original drawing Graham produced for me, the additional quarry is in the bottom right above the track shown making the layout on 3 different levels.

And you know how much I like shunting but it was really an excuse to have some of the ICI bogie hoppers or at least a reason to run them through Millers Dale and Monsal Head.

Progress has been a bit slow this last couple of weeks,  but I've managed to add the entrance to the quarry besides Chee Tor tunnel, although not prototypical and somewhat lower than planned the hillside has been extended.

It was my intention to make it slope more on the righthand side but there wasn't enough clearance for the up and over door.

Well, to my eternal shame, it turns out that it's been almost exactly a year since I was last here.

Paul had tidied up in my honour! My mission for the day - and I chose to accept it - was:

PXL_20230713_124220115.jpg.d6ff6a905f00cca15e8ba5d7bfcecc1c.jpg

Fill in this piece of scenery on the lift out section. Plenty of 'make it up as you go along' carpentry ensued.

Now with added chicken wire. This gives an idea of how it is intended to be a continuation of the existing scenery in the Chee Dale area.

We decided on it being lift out, just in case. By now, it's likely to have been mod-roc'd (other types of plaster-impregnated bandage are available).

Meanwhile, whilst I was there ...

We set up some trains for photography at Miller's Dale.

Paul's been working on his specialist subject - buildings.

Definitely starting to look the part.

The 9F sets off towards the next challenge - how to disguise / cover the 180 deg curve beyond here. Much cogitating took place.

Stayed tuned for next visit, hopefully in rather less than a year's time (!)

You're not wrong there Graham,

First stage completed, 3 layers of plaster bandage applied.

As soon as I have the time it will be skimmed with polyfiller coloured with brown paint, before the flock is applied.

Had a look at the Grantham thread just now - all very quiet - is nothing happening there, Graham?

Alan

Not just at the moment - but stand by for a burst of activity next month. It's all happening on HotN at the moment - can't be in two places at once!

You clearly can, I'd no sooner marvelled at impressive progress in the Pennines when I find you scrubbling about in the Peak District!

A bit of an amalgam following latest visit today - forgot to take any pix last time(!)

PXL_20231130_142204853.jpg.f420c6da4ba7588c23451bf11b5aa8a8.jpg

Ivatt 4MT rolls down the grade through Millers Dale with a parcels train. So, what's new, you may ask?

Well, the previous visit(s) pictured more or less completed the scenery structure work in the Chee Dale area, so attention has now turned to the Millers Dale scene, across the famous viaducts and beyond.

PXL_20231130_141353215.jpg.fa62a17a3b4424deace662c710e7d5e6.jpg

This pic might explain better? Behind the farthest viaduct has to be a backscene, with parts removable to get at the hidden tracks below for maintenance / cleaning ... and the odd disaster recovery(!). The piece of unpainted hardboard is permanent fixed, as is the tunnel mouth former beyond, but the piece of backscene between IS removable.

PXL_20231130_141438276.jpg.380dff9f204ca08f862d2132b2f0a316.jpg

As is this rather oddly shaped piece! It covers the access gap bottom left in the previous picture. The whole backscene geometry becomes a bit of a nonsense at this point - in reality, there's a gaping river canyon beyond the bridge(!) so this structure needs a skim of plaster then painting blue to match the sky colour.

PXL_20231130_141737851.jpg.01023490ac39b134d3880b9709c9f2f0.jpg

Hopefully it'll blend in a little bit more than this pic might suggest.

Paul, meanwhile, was uncharacteristically wielding a soldrin' iron ... (!)

Update, thanks to animotion of this parish, who sent me some wonderful photos, I have made a start on the last station building, platforms 2 and 3.

Firstly platform 3 side was cut out and the stone work added.

20240109_183552.jpg.8278bc97057311bf785b475d2f2c6071.jpg

Then the remaining walls were added and the window overlays were built up.

And now the upstairs is being added.

20240215_221710.jpg.abf168373e80171490f9b1103b2d17cc.jpg

And finally a test fit on the layout before I get any further.
