NiuModels
Hot off the press is the first test print of the Tender Cab to fit the Hornby J36 model. J36's were regularly assigned for snow-plough duty and a number were fitted with tender cabs to protect the crew during adverse weather. The model is based of the cab fitted to J36 No. 9793 (BR No. 65345) from a number of reference photos. The cab was fitted to the loco early in it's life and remained in place on this loco until it was withdrawn from service is 1967. The CAD design requires a couple alterations to the right hand side and to lower the high. A second test print will be due next week. along with confirmation of the price. 9

RMweb Gold 46444 Posted September 16, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 16, 2020 Brilliant news! A really useful accessory and nicely printed. I'll certainly be ordering one when they are released.
AJCT
Don't forget the extra steps and handrails provided to enable access to the tender top for taking water and redistributing coal - seen here on 65345 on 27 Aug 1966 at Smeaton with the Railway Society of Scotland "J36 Railtour". MikeTrice
Compared to the photos that cab looks too tall unless it is necessary for clearance. Is the roof profile different from the loco cab?
JeremyC
Having scratchbuilt tender cabs for two j36s I can say they're a bit of a nightmare. There are 5 or 6 different designs (including 2 weather boards). The most common type is similar to that produced by Niumodels, but even here there are variations. Some points to note. The lower RH side of this cab should be cut away to provide clearance for the handbrake handle, with the side sheet being supported by a round bar frame. There are quite a number of variations in the height of the cab. Rear steps, photographs seem to suggest the rear steps on the frames and tank backs, plus the side rear vertical handrails were not fitted until the early/mid 1950s. Some tenders lost the horizontal handrail across the tank back when the rear steps were fitted. The part of the cab roof protruding forward of the sides in many photos looks to have been a tarpaulin, not a steel roof. It's definitely a case of look at photos. 'Mons' had differently shaped rear steps on the frames either side of the tender! Malcolm

Nowt like any tender cab fitted to J36s, I'm afraid. 2

NiuModels
Updated photos of our J36 tender cab that fit the current Hornby model. The kit requires minimal alteration to the model to fit. The kit consists of a 3D printed and rear tender steps (show in grey on the Hornby R3621 J36 model). It's available either direct from us or via our ebay shop. at £12:50 plus postage
JeremyC
I have reservations re the rear door. From the photos it doesn't look as if there was a raised bead around it and the actual door looks to have been set in by the thickness of the plate (presumably actually hinged behind it). I'm also not convinced that the door was split. However it's difficult to be certain about individual details as there are so many variations. https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/23/587/ https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/28/832/ Edited November 8, 2020 by JeremyC
