RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 Hi Guys, this is a local line to us which we have never actually been to before. Having just bought a pair of electric bikes we decided to take the motorhome out and found a superb farm site to stay at called Measham House Farm. It is an ideal place to stay being 5 miles from the railway station at Shackerstone. For a first run out on the bikes we wanted a journey which would not be too taxing. We arrived last night and got a whole field to ourselves.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 We booked tickets for the 12.30 train and set off in plenty of time so we could look around the station. The station approach sidings houses several diesels.

RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 Last one of the museum and out onto the platform. The museum houses railwayana from around the country.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 It is a nice station building and I like the covered area. Nice to see facilities getting back to normal again. The building on platform 2 is a modern replacement and houses the gift shop which stocked O Gauge, so a purchase had to be made.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 Here is our locomotive for the day, 6989 “Wightwick Hall”. She is a real beauty. Built in BR days after Nationalisation.
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 Carriages were the usual BR MkI’s. What was very welcome was the bar was open and the barman came around taking orders for drinks ready for the return trip. We will go to Bosworth Field another day as it was rather hot today. Lez likes Teddies so one came home with us to go in the van.

RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 Even though the loco was really clean, weathering could still be seen in areas such as the smokebox and the axles. So hopefully useful pics for reference.

RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted July 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2021 Now back at the van after a really enjoyable day. I would certainly recommend a visit to the line. All the staff were really friendly and helpful. Cheers, Ade.
jamieb
Thanks for posting the pics, that's a lovely restored Hall. It's a railway that is a bit under the radar, must go back one day soon
PenrithBeacon
I went about 15 years ago during a steam gala and I agree that the staff are nice and friendly but the visit was marred by one idiot who insisted on driving an 03 into the station and then leaving it there. It seems he didn't want the railway to run a steam gala. Apart from that, it was an enjoyable visit and I was particularly impressed by the restoration of the station building.
Nearholmer
First time I went was c40 years ago, and our MRC mini-bus load contained several retained fire brigade members, one of whom was wearing a cream linen suit. The train managed to set a field on fire, and the FB guys felt morally obliged to grab beaters from a bin at the line side (must have been a regular occurrence) and set-to. They did a great job, but the cream linen suit was never the same again. 1
sleepyrider
Their midweek DMU service is highly recommended for those such as myself that rather miss the blue / grey branchline era
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted August 8, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 8, 2021 Yesterday we visited Shackerstone again as friends of ours wanted to see the line. So I took a few more photos, some of which are detail shots for reference when weathering etc. Plus another good excuse for visiting is the shop which sells O gauge. So came home with the new Dapol GWR container wagon. Cheers, Ade.
