how i built the lights for helm....

.......for my cables i used 5mm brass wire ...

they scale out at about 30in x18in may be a tad bigger than i wanted but once there on the layout they look ok, ...

Thanks for the "how to" - most ingenious! Just one thing - did you mean 0.5mm brass wire..?

As for size, they look fine. Possibly they might seem a bit big, but in real life we tend to see them from ground level and size can be difficult to judge - a floodlight in the Yard I work from was down being repaired a few weeks back - I was amazed how large it really was, close up!!

sorry 0.5mm brass wire

theres some lights on a factory near to where i live has some big flood lights on it they look like 3ft x 2ft

when you stand back from the layout they look ok,it all adds to the illusion i'm trying to create, there won't be many people who will notice if there a couple of mm to big

how i built the lights for helm

post-13979-0-73396500-1325544000_thumb.jpg

first i used a 3/16 tube and a 10mm x 6mm rectangle

post-13979-0-41524900-1325544137_thumb.jpg

cut a 45 degree angle

post-13979-0-44705800-1325544192_thumb.jpg

then do a straight cut

post-13979-0-81641600-1325544264_thumb.jpg

then glue it on to the tube

post-13979-0-58988200-1325544308_thumb.jpg

once the glue has set recut the 45 and straight cuts

post-13979-0-06349700-1325544396_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-49072800-1325544566_thumb.jpg

then glue onto a piece of plastic, cut out and tidy up with a file

post-13979-0-91564400-1325544593_thumb.jpg

then give it a coat of black paint

post-13979-0-84148500-1325544654_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-02389200-1325544690_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-03835500-1325544866_thumb.jpg

use a 3 mm drill from the front to drill out the back, then add 3mm led

post-13979-0-89422900-1325544903_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-91256000-1325544924_thumb.jpg

then bend and cut a 6mm staple and solder to the legs of the led to make the brackets

post-13979-0-13880300-1325545064_thumb.jpg

post-13979-0-04943800-1325545083_thumb.jpg

file the led to match the 45 degree then give it another coat of paint

now decied were there are to be fix and plan were to put your cable run keeping everything level and 90 degree corners, for my cables i used 5mm brass wire soldered to the leg of the leds and wired in series + suitable resistor

before i installed them they had a coat of silver paint, once all was dry i fix them to the buildings using peco thin track pins, the brass wire was feed down the buildings through the baseboard and connected up underneath

they scale out at about 30in x18in may be a tad bigger than i wanted but once there on the layout they look ok, just some yard lights to design now, then i can cross that of my "to do list"

Wow! What a great idea, why didn't I think of it? Will be building a few non working ones until I get round to putting some working lights on layout. Thanks again.

Kibri and Preiser both do office equipment and one or the other does a set of computer monitors that light up with an led inside - I have a set tucked away somewhere- they also do HO portakabin type security offices

I have used the Preiser ones on Fort Myers so guess it must be the Kibri ones. Will have to try and get some of those.

really want a tank car,so its pulled out of the fiddle yard (front track) by a switcher, then it either runs round in the small loop or pushes the tank back into fiddle yard (back track) then i can lift it of, and the switcher can come back light or with a different tank car
