Just picked up on this layout thread, very impressed with the urban scenery. Have there been any developments since your last posting, and is it ever likely to go out on exhibition, or will I never get to see it in the flesh?

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the kind comments.

The layout stalled a bit, but I have recently built a freelance platform canopy for the front platform. I'll do another for the back platform in the near future.

The layout is firmly fixed to the shed wall, so won't be travelling anywhere. Well I hope not!

I've lots of other interests, so wouldn't have time to exhibit a layout if I built one for that purpose.

I'll try and be more active with it this year, and do all the detailing that needs finishing.

Just a thought re the platform canopy - why not leave the other platform bare, it could look very prototypical, a sort of reconstruction work-in-progress scenario. Also the signal gantry that's in place but now no longer used looks very convincing, depicting old/obsolete infrastructure not yet removed.

The other platform does have services, so I'd probably need to have a canopy. Although these days passenger comfort is not what it used to be.

But an interesting idea, less is more type of thing.

I'll ponder. :scratchhead:

Well, 18 months have gone by and still working on the layout, albeit only lately.

I've done a bit of scenic work, putting in some lineside cabling and added cables to the point motors, AWS ramps, signals, and cabinets. Also made another canopy for the platforms.

Picked up a couple of loco's, Bachmann 47 406 in Transrail and a Hornby 56 127 same livery. I hope to either re-motor the 56 or get a newer style chassis for it, with a view to a sound decoder.

On that note, I'd bought several decoders in the intervening months, 5 Hornby TTS and 3 DP4SAP from DCC concepts, and have been fitting them over the last couple of weeks as I now have a controller that can cope with the full range of functions.  So I'm now getting to grips with decoder CV's and my new SignaTrak controller. Considering the TTS ones are designed to go in Hornby loco's, it's certainly not plug and play.

However, I persevered and have now, so far, 5 loco's running on DCC. Hornby class 60, a Bachmann 47, and a Bachmann 37, all with TTS sound. The non-sound decoders are in a Vitrain 37 and the Transrail 56. I had to fit a decoder socket for this as it wasn't DCC ready. It's not too smooth and is noisy, as was expected from essentially a Mainline product. I may strip it down and try and get it running a bit smoother and quieter.

The 60 was very good straight from the box and I didn't need to touch any settings. The 47 & 37 were a bit jerky at slow speed, but trawling the forum I found a remedy here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/139837-tts-sound/ see post  #10. That seems to have worked fine.

To finish, a few pics of some of the above.   Rob

Now the end of March and the random startup problems, see

have been resolved, I've fitted a couple of Bachmann Class 66's with Hornby TTS decoders and replacement speakers from www.roads-and-rails.co.uk. No connection just a satisfied customer.

Also, a Hornby Class 56 & Bachmann Class 66 have been non-sound fitted with DCC Concepts DP4SAP's to get them running on DCC.

I'll try and get some video of the sound 66's and post it at a later date.

Eagerly awaiting the TTS Class 08 decoder to be available as a stand-alone, should be out soon. Hoping Hornby will do the Class 56 in TTS at some stage.

Well another year gone since any update. I'd been doing some TTS decoder fittings and not anything to the layout.

However, just before all the COVID-19 stuff kicked off, I decided to do some alterations to the layout. I wasn't completely happy with the length of run I had and have decided to extend the layout on the left side around the wall.

There will be 3 lines going left. The 2 main lines will disappear behind a scenic break, and a branch running to a small platform halt with a crossover and siding.

In the left foreground there will be 2 sidings for stabling cleaning DMU's. These were previously running lines. There's a dead siding too, left over from the old branch.

At the back left will be another warehouse, with a siding and a dummy siding to place a wagon or two.

Some of this will probably morph into a different  scenario as it evolves.

Pic's and updates to come.

Some progress with the extension, track laid and some ballasting done in places. Before I can do more I need to place signals, cabinets, etc. New warehouse structure done, needs paint & weathering to blend in. I repurposed the old factory that acted as the scenic break before and used it as part of a low relief backscene.

The track curvature is tight, but stock seems to be traversing it OK. It's in a low speed area,  so trains should look OK going prototypically slow.

Not 100% convinced with the scenic break for the 2  main running lines, but inspiration may strike me further along the way. This will have a road above it from which access to the halt is gained by the footbridge.

As I said previously, I tend to morph my ideas as I go along. Watch this space.

A bit more progress, have painted and weathered the warehouse and ballasted the halt area. The warehouse needs a roof, and the platform a surface, and weathering in of the ballast.

A little more progress since the last update. The new DMU stabling and fuelling area is coming along, with a scratch built fuelling point and kit built crew quarters in place. Some more ballasting done and a few odd ends tidied up.

A long while since anything done on the layout, although there have been several alterations, but none really successful.

The shed that houses the layout will soon have a 6' extension to one end(to the left of the existing layout) and this will allow longer trains to be run, including 3 car and combi DMU's , plus freight and engineering trains.

I'm trying to upload the original pictures, however I renamed many and it's difficult to find the exact picture to replace the original. Those that are obvious will be replaced in time.

I'll probably start another topic when things get moving again with some of the old pic's and then the new build.

Burnt Mills Mk2, if you will.
