edp2
Thanks for the kind comments. As Stubby 47 says, "well chosen camera angles" do improve the presentation of the layout, I've seen some layouts in both photographs and exhibitions and sometimes the real thing is not as good as the photos and vice-versa. My layout definitely improves in the photos, I think the cropping of the surrounding room focuses the eyes on the layout. The colours seem richer, down to the camera I presume. Anyway, that's the basic part of the layout finished. I need to add a little clutter, details and people, possibly an Open Day for the railway. The wagons would be relatively clean on a Heritage Railway but mine need toning down a bit, they're too bright. I should play with it a little as well, and stop my mind wandering onto what I could do with the bigger board, 60 x 15 inches, I made first but decided to leave until I'd practised on a boxfile layout. rouse2037
Great looking inglenook - very well done sir! How are you going to "play" - tiddlywink computer / waybills / wagon cards ? etc to decide the puzzle. I sold my inglenook - Neptune Road - and have built (in an afternoon and all from left overs..!) a tuning fork in oo. Its 48" x 4" in oo and proving to be just as much fun to shunt on using the "playing card" method - six wagons, shunt four. Cheers R GER
edp2
Thanks Roger Neptune Road was one of the layouts that confirmed to me that the Metcalf kits could be improved upon and I liked the run down atmosphere it gave off. Some other layout using Metcalf kits are Northbridge: http://perlevalleyrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/plymouth-model-railway-exhibition-2012.html and the British HO site: http://www.british-ho.com/ where you will see some good small layouts including Carholm Yard, which is very similar to my layout though not an inglenook. I think it was after seeing this that I decided to cut up the warehouses as I was struggling for depth in the layout. I'll probably make some wagon cards in the end. As most of the wagons are open, I've just been drawing some pieces of paper numbered 1 to 5 from an imaginary hat, putting them in the wagons and then putting them into numerical order. A layout in an afternoon! I think there's a lesson for us all there. I spend most of my modelling time thinking rather than doing but, when I make a determined effort, it's surprising how much gets done. Going back to looking at Neptune Road reminds me of the great job you did on the warehouses so I'm going to use this photo of some warehouses near the Mersey Tunnel to look for inspiration in detailing my warehouses: Sorry it's not a full size photo. I expect I'm doing something wrong but clicking on image in the Reply Box menu just greys out the page and I have to close down and start again. edp2
HiI've added some further detailing to the layout. I started off by making some pallets from cardboard strips. I made them euro-size 1 m x 1.2 m and made a beige set with the planks along the short side one way and a grey set with the planks running along the long side. The finished pallets. The second batch of grey pallets were much better than the beige pallets. Possibly it's something to do with the paint, the beige pallets were weathered as well but I've put most of the loads on the beige pallets. Here's an overall view of the layout. Some palleted loads and a broken attempt at a pallet but put to good use as a broken pallet. Warehouses have been further weathered. Rusty window frames and bird muck.have been applied to most buildings. Here's the mirror end. A straight on view reveals the secret but I still like it. Some bins have been added to the yard and the portakabin now has some metal framing. I made 2 portakabins to stack but they were too dominating for such a small layout. And here's the other end. A good camera angle definitely improves the look of the layout. The wagons still stand out like sore thumbs. Even though it's supposed to be a Heritage railway they still need toning down more. It needs some people as well. Thanks for looking Ed
rouse2037
Great work there - the buildings look nice and grotty! Very nicely done Ed and pallets are my favorite things - never have too many! Cheers Roger
edp2
Thanks Roger. I'm hoping to make the far side look more like a building site with the grotty buildings about to be renovated. The near side is to be a transport museum running an open day. That's the plan but it wouldn't be the first time I've changed my mind. I've had a go at toning down the wagons. It will be interesting to see how they photograph next time I've some additions to show. Ed

xkopite
Great job on this mate. Can I ask you if you have a link to your Liverpool warehouses, I don't seem to find these great warehouse pics. I need them for a back ground to my 1960s Liverpool hauliers diorama. I hope you can oblige please, Dave.
edp2
Thanks Polly, Job and Dave, Dave - in an effort to save a few Mb because the kids have Gbs of music, apps and videos on the hard drive, I had a clean out of my photos. I've found the one from the right hand end The main warehouse group was made up from several photos I'd taken but I've deleted them. There are several versions on Google Images if you type in Liverpool Warehouses. Here's some links: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dangerous_disco/3632823905/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/earlex/8644445798/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/dangerous_disco/3633641360/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/arthurjohnpicton/6003707056/ Hope this helps Ed

awoodford
Thanks for bumping this up Armin - I'd not seen this thread before. It certainly is a lovely layout. I wonder what's become of it in the last couple of years. Alan.
edp2
Hi Alan The layout does still exist. I've toned down the colours of the wagons a little but that's about it. There are occasional problems with couplings or running but nothing dreadful. I should play with it more really. I've put some thought into a follow-up layout based on the picture from this Huntley & Palmer topic in this forum: a large warehouse/factory to the rear of the layout keep it pointless using a Peco Loco-lift some smaller warehouses - one named Armstrong & Osman specialising in export to the Caribbean to a company with Miller in the title I picked up 4 second hand type A and B containers on conflats for £4 each in Hatton's that I thought might be used for import/export of furniture from a warehouse It's all a bit vague and I keep letting other things get in the way but I suspect there's a lot of other members with the same problem. andyram
Enjoyed reading through this thread. A lovely layout.
awoodford
Thanks for the update Ed. I'm pleased the layout still exists. I suspect many micros only have short lives, despite the care and attention that goes into building them. I can see the appeal of the inspiring Huntley & Palmer photo in the other thread, enough to get anyone's planning juices flowing. Alan.
