Fawley Hill Steam & Vintage Transport Weekend - 17th - 19th May 2013

This weekend there is a special event at Sir William McAlpine's railway in the grounds of his house just outside Henley-On-Thames.

A short extract from http://www.fawleyhill.co.uk/

The event will celebrate the Centenary of Fawley’s resident Hudswell Clarke 060 Saddle Tank Engine No 31. She has worked for Sir William’s family all her life and for the past 48 years has been happily pulling wagon loads of visitors up the steepest standard gauge gradient in the world at Fawley Hill.

THIS WILL BE A CELEBRATION OF ALL FORMS OF TRANSPORT:

from CAMELS to PLANES (Hurricane, Spitfire, Red Arrows’ plane + more coming)  and MACHINERY: from STATIONARY ENGINES TO  TRACTION ENGINES, HORSE-DRAWN PLOUGHS to PLOUGHING ENGINES to JCBs. STEAM CARS to FERRARIS, STEAM ROLLERS, LAWN MOWERS, MOTOR BIKES, BUSES, VANS, LORRIES, SCOOTERS, BICYCLES, an AMAZING ARRAY OF MILITARY MIGHT,  FIRE ENGINES, a STEAM BUS: even BOATS!

I will be there on the Friday evening with the Hornby Live Steam Club, there will be other modelling exhibits, include the Warley club and of course this is the home of Holiday Haunts.

The whole event is aimed at raising funds for a number of small charities.

Excellent link thanks Mark and nice to know the 'bus route as I wouldn't fancy meeting one going the other way on some of the lanes! (in fact the 'bus looks like quite an attractive option).

My big concern is the weather as we are forecast rain for most of this week - albeit mainly showers but 'heavy' on a couple of days and that caused problems last year so it looks like a cue to keep a close eye on their website.  The event also looks to be bigger than ever this year but it really is worth going to in my past experience.

Just come back from the show - excellent.  A really good day out - I've always wanted the chance to see this private railway and museum collection (the amount of railway memorabilia has to be seen to be believed).  And to hear the loco coming up the 1 in 12 whilst standing in an open wagon directly behind it...oh yes  :)

Tips:  The tickets for the train ride are extra (£5) and are sold in the main field, from a stall opposite the main marquee (maybe 100 feet away from the marquee).  A lot of people were expecting them to be sold at the railway station - nope.  The tickets are also timed, but we found that the staff on the station were pretty relaxed about this - if there was room they let you on (we went 3 hours before the ticket was timed for).  Also, by about 2pm today all tickets for the train were sold out, so don't leave it too late.

There were loads of traction engines, classic cars, bikes, camel racing, heavy horses, dog show, heritage funfair (dodgems, big wheel, twister, helter skelter..), plenty of stalls etc. Spitfire air display (and also a Hurricane as well on the Sunday, plus Red Devils parachute team.

Well worth a tenner admission, with £6 concessions (a bargain in fact).  I hope they do it again next year..  ;)

p.s. And the Gurkha security guards were very, very cool.  Nice guys - made a pleasant change from the usual oiks at some events I could mention

Yes indeed it is a fantastic day out for the money. Lots of classic cars, a couple of boats, lots of traction engines, classic lorries, a few buses, small military vehicles, camel racing, steam train and the O Gauge layout. I am running a modern image airbraked train on the layout with the pre-production Heljan 40.

Great day out and massively expanded compared with a couple of years ago - I only took the little camera so nothing much in the way of decent pics I'm afraid but at least it avoided me spending ages and umpteen thousand pixels on lots of uncommon (for our neck of the woods) traction engines.  Nice to see and chat with Missy and ElDavo but on both occasions I came across Brian he was busy nattering already.

What a fantastic day, I really enjoyed myself.

So many photos to choose from, I had a bit of time this morning to quickly go through them but it was difficult to find some that havent been already posted and also give a good feeling of the show. Anyway, here are a selection from me...

Smashing stuff Missy.  Mrs Stationmaster was so entranced hearing about what we saw yesterday that she required to go today - and another great day but some differences including a Hurricane to go with the Spitfire and the Red Devils Parachute Regt display team.  I shall have to see if there's anything good enough to post among the pile of pixels I expended.

Cracking weekend wasn't it. You should have butted in Mike I was probably only waffling to someone I see a lot anyway.

After the show finished they sent the Avling Porter down the line, very gingerly as it only has the outside handbrake! As you can see there was a strong contingent in the open filming it. Then it made a nice return up the hill followed by No 31 which looked just like scene from St Trinians.

Here's a few more piccies:

I'm not sure if the D-Type Jag was genuine.  It certainly looked good, but the registration number matches a green Jag registered in Jan 65 (D-Type production was from 1954 to 1957) and the DVLA have it down as 4200cc (a D-Type was 3400cc initially, raised to 3800cc later on).  Shame, but then again would you leave a motor worth the wrong side of a million notes sitting in a field? :O   Thought not...

And a few inside the Museum, showing just a tiny portion of what's actually there:

Hi Stationmaster

I understood that photography is not permitted in the museum?

Hi,

I asked one of the museum stewards first, and he gave the o.k so long as the flash was turned off (not only are flashes annoying to others, they also cause damage to exhibits by accellerating the ageing/fading process - apparently one "flash" is the same as six day's worth of sunlight).
