There were also some fitted 21 tonners used, notably on a flow from Shotton to South Wales. . First real use of AB wagons was toward the mid-80s using the SR (Standard Railfreight) wagons - which were occasional visitors to Tidal Sidings, but not in great numbers. . Fat Controller Posted September 23, 2014 Share Posted September 23, 2014 I'd go with mainly fitted 16-tonners by then, possibly with some fitted 21-tonners (I don't remember seeing unfitted ones in scrap traffic, perhaps because shipment coal from Swansea used huge numbers). OHV (steel-bodied) and OWV (wooden-bodied) 13t opens were sometimes used, though the latter tended to be on a one-way trip, as loading/unloading wrecked the bodywork; I remember some being loaded at Longport from the former coke-loading ramp. Some became firewood... A decade previously, 16t unfitted minerals predominated; when doing my daily wagon census at BSC Landore (someone had to..)in the summer of 1974, it was extremely unusual to see anything else. That said, there was still some variety, with welded/rivetted bodies and even the odd ex-LMS/LNER wagon. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Pretty certain they didn't; South Wales, at the time, was an importing region, with flows to BSC plants at Llanwern, Port Talbot, Landore and Dowlais, Duport at Llanelli and ASW in Cardiff. Rivercider Posted September 24, 2014 Share Posted September 24, 2014 I agree that fitted 16t minerals are the most likely for scrap in South Wales in the early 1980s. In the late 1970s we were sending scrap from Lawrence Hill in Bristol to Llanelli in unfitted 16t minerals, The 1980 Steel Strike and subsequent steel plant closures meant many coal wagons suddenly became surplus and large numbers of unfitted coal wagons of all types were then stored and scrapped. There were occasional forwardings of scrap from the West Country in fitted 16t minerals in the early 1980s going on normal services. Here are a couple of shots of scrap traffic in South Wales in the 1980s. 46049 passes Gaer Junction Newport with 6C43 Severn Tunnel Junction - Llandeilo Junction 25/1/82 From comments added to this photo in my Flickr site we now know the scrap was tin can offcuts from Upton Park in Essex and destined to Nevill's Dock Llanelli for Bachelor Robinsons Works for de-tinning. Later in the 1980s MDVs appeared on scrap traffic 47112 works a train of MDVs of scrap past Severn Tunnel Junction Undy Yard, it is heading for Cardiff Tidal, 25/9/86 cheers Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Towards the end of vacuum-braked operations, a hundred or so MDVs were fitted with through air-pipes, becoming MDW; most were used on relatively short-distance flows within N E England (Blaydon, Dunston and Byker to Teesside, for example). I thought I remembered seeing 21t wagons coded MDW but only had a couple of poor quality prints which didn't quite show for definite what the tops code was. 37198 IIRC on the Sunderland, Southwick Branch, scrap train made up of 5 MDWs in 1986. philwaglab Posted October 18, 2014 Share Posted October 18, 2014 I dont remember 21 ton MDV's being loaded with scrap up until 1984 in South Wales.Their main use was on block coal trains to Llanwern and Margam from the Gwent,valleys etc.I think once the coal traffic declined it was a case of use as many fitted wagons as possable for the traffic on offer.
