Like the replica HA van, looks realy like what I used to drive. Colour and lettering spot on. This is the second one I have seen a photo of, the other appears to be ex B T van with Chester reg number somwhere in the North West, it has a photopic diary of the restoration.

Two of the very common Mk2 Astras, these were F. G & H reg and all were dealer registered as was the norm for those couple of years, instead of each region registering it's own vehicles. Supprised I had only 2 of my own photos, so common they got ignored.

They got everywhere- just not very quickly....They would presumably have been delivered originally by rail- I've seen shots of the flat trailers used with them on Lowfits, but never the tractor units.

I bought a copy of Branch Line Video's, Memories of the Bodmin & Wadebridge Rly at Wadebridge exhibition yesterday, on the back cover is a picture of a Scammell 3 wheel tractor unit on a 3 plank wagon behind a beattie well tank with a BR standard brake and further freight wagons behind that, probably being shunted in Wadebridge station in the 60s.

Interesting to note the white logo in the second to last picture on the Dodge crew bus, I thought most were red.

The arrow was red about 14 years before the photo was taken. Cab was repainted but not the body. Well spotted, I ought to weather my model of it.

Red cars fade like that don't they.

New from Oxford Diecast.

Morris J2 ambulance, Swindon Works. I think I can review this model's accuracy as a few years ago I owned the real vehicle. The J2 minibus body has been captured very well by Oxford in 4mm scale, unlike Corgi's van version that was too large. The livery of BR cream with crimson lettering "Ambulance British Railways Swindon" and fleet number 280W and registration VLW943 are correctly carried along with a Winkworth bell and illuminated Ambulance sign on the front.

The real vehicle was new to Swindon works in 1958 and used to carry injured staff to and from the local hospital until sold to preservation in 1981.

Another preserved vehicle from Oxford is their Scammell Scarab 3ton with flat trailer depicted as NDN753, fleet no. HN6185 N an ex North Eastern unit which is now preserved and can be regularly seen at rallys. The Scarab is a superb model and again correct size for 4mm scale.

Not seen one of that vintage but the Sheffield AMO District Inspectors got Mk3 (?) Escort vans in 1989-90 when their HAs finally gave up the ghost. At least one of the HAs was largely held together by Red Star tape (remember that ?) by this time but enthusiasm for the new Escorts was short lived - one shed a rear axle with less than 500 miles on the clock.

Ah the Escorts. We had 2 Mk2 vans at our depot. One for the locking fitter and one for the telecoms lineman. Corgi did their Mk1 Escort van in BR livery but I have yet to find a photo of one (Chalenge guys !) The Mk3s were plentiful after the Itals and before the Astras mainly F reg.

No it was a front 3/4 view so definite mk1 thats why i remembered , but why didn't i save it :(

Many thanks, if you do find it I would like to see it. Anyway that justifies the Corgi model.

Now all I want to see is a BR Minor van to justify all the models produced.

All too modern for my period of the mid 1950's. I worked at British Railways Victoria Parcels (Manchester) in 1959 for nine months delivering out to Salford and Weast. We carried 'passenger' rated packages and the vans were postwar Bedford OB types, a few forward drive lorries (cannot remember the make but they might have been Bedfords too). Driver Henry Chew and me had a prewar Morris commercial, and when it was being services we had a large Dennis with characteristic prewar snout.

 

All were blood & custard. The freight side had mostly prewar 3-wheel Scammels.

 

Question then... Apart from the Scammel, which I've got, are the other vehicles available in 4mm scale?

There are Ford and Austin vehicles of similar vintage to your Bedford in the Pocketbond range. Base Toys do a Karrier Bantam, though that may be a bit modern.

Hi Larry

For your period, the LM Region had some Bedford M type vans, with coach built bodies, the Cooper Craft model with a plasticard body. Smaller than the Bedford O but very similar.

The Pocketbond Ford flatbed was very common, although the cab needs a bit of work with a file.

The Austins were mainly late 40s ex LMS, lasted till the mid 50s.

The bonetted Dennis was the Horla as a mechanical horse (Langley kit) or the pre war Ace as a horse or a flat (the old Anbrico one)

The Base toys Karrier is suitable for the 50s by adding a divided windscreen but the wheels need replacing with somthing smaller.

Most of the RTR manufacturers are improving on their railway road vehicles all the time but are still a long way off in accuracy compared with todays locos and stock. Nothing beyond the capability of your talents .

The first one looks like Burgate in Canterbury, taken from the Sun St end- the cathedral would be behind the buildings on the left. This area surprisingly survived the Baedecker raids, which destroyed a lot of the centre to the west and south of Burgate.

Thanks Brian, that confirms the Commer 25cwt van as a Southern Region one. My research so far has only revealed the Southern to have bought the standard panel vans.

 

A new book may be of interest to anybody modeling the Southern in that era.

"A pictorial parade of Southern Region Road Vehicles" by Murray & Robertson, (Noodle Books)

just published contains superb black and white photos from mainly the 50s, all Southern and many vehicles unique to the SR. Thoroughly recomended to anybody modeling the red and cream period.

 

An appeal, can sombody tell me the wheelbase of a Karrier Bantam Mk2 mechanical horse, for improving the Base Toys model.
