StuartM
A 2mm modular layout comprising a 2 road approach to a mainline station and a small fuelling/stabling point and 3 sidings for either carriages, postal vans or dmus. using Scalescenes printed texture sheets
StuartM
I had this idea for a few years now, but the lack of decent rtr brick-sheets with arches, or my inability to cut arches in, have up until this point stopped me from making a start. I hate seeing models with arches that have been stuck on and standing proud of the brickwork, as this rarely happened in the real world. I've recently discovered Scalescenes and John the owner very kindly made me some brick-sheets to my requirements. My intention is to use Scalescene products for everything as far as possible. So far everything you see (apart from the baseboard) is Scalescenes textured sheets. I'm useless with coming up with names, so I've called this layout Greenwood cutting as a thank you to John Greenwood who did me a favour re-jigging my 04, which I doubt I'll ever get to repay, and also because this layout is set in part of an urban environment that used to be a green wood before the railway came. I've started back to front in modelling terms, in that I've done the civil engineering before I've laid the track, the reason being is that the tunnels are 3 and 4 inches deep and I think it will be easier to lay the ground cover and ballast neatly if I know where walls of the structures start and end. At the moment the bridges are not fixed in place. On the left, the otherside of the bridge is a mainline station, this could either be a terminus or a straight through station. In the cutting is going to be a small fuelling/stabling point and some sidings that serve the station.

RMweb Gold Donw Posted May 19, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 19, 2015 Will this just be a diorama or are the tracks going to run through the sides to fiddle yards or other modules? on
StuartM
Will this just be a diorama or are the tracks going to run through the sides to fiddle yards or other modules? on Yes to all of the above It is being built so it can be used in modular form, or with fiddle yards, But will to start with it will be a diorama, albeit a working one. StuartM
I've made a start on some of the track and just to make sure I can squeeze it all in, I've mocked up the through roads, fuelling point and carriage sidings using a mixture of 2mm and ngauge track. Guest bri.s
Great idea the small area and track plan has as much if not more operational potential than a lot of big layouts Look forward to your progress

Guest bri.s
Nice looking track ,just wondering do you paint the whole track rail colour first then go over the sleepers with the black? Brian
StuartM
Nice looking track ,just wondering do you paint the whole track rail colour first then go over the sleepers with the black? Brian No, I just paint the rails with Humbrol 186 and then the sleepers with Humbrol 66, you could paint everything brown first, but my way saves on paint. I expect quite a bit of the grey to come off when I apply the ballast, so a further coat will probably be required

porkie
Looking spot on, the bridges looking stunning, something I've been struggling to create at the moment. Very inspiring your handy work
StuartM
Some of the track leading to the fuelling point has been laid and ballasted The siding (with the yet to be converted oil tanks) was a last minute addition and well worth the extra effort. Once all the track has been laid this will allow for the bridges to be fixed into place, then I can build the rear retaining wall The building at the back is just a mock up that gives an idea of available space. Guest bri.s
Wow 3 foot long ,it's giving me ideas lol Just shows you don't need a lot of space to build something and possibly main line aswell , if the fiddle yards were big enough you could run decent length trains and it wouldn't look wrong Brian

StuartM
I noticed from the previous photos that the joins in the brick papers were very obvious, so I've made a completely new bridge with fewer visible joins. I've also taken the opportunity to change the design slightly.

StuartM
Because I build in an organic fashion (in other words I make it up as I go along) I start with an idea in my head and then try to replicate in model form, however the drawback of this is that sometimes what I can imagine can't be squeezed into the available area, so I then have to play around with ideas until I like what I see. The land behind the depot was going to be woodland/bushes etc rather like you would see when looking out the window while passing through Wandsworth common, but as you will see from the imagines below, that didn't really work, so today I knocked up a prototype building to see what that would look like instead. I think it works better, although I might rebuild with darker brick and alter a lot of the grassy hill.
