Model shops in Europe

Hi
I travel a bit, and occasionally get to visit model shops abroad.

Model Shop Eindhoven

Today I visted Willies in Eindhoven - few minutes from the town centre. Good selection of Marklin, mostly G1, HO & N, very little of anything 7mm, didn't have any stock but an ESU Loksound V4 would have been €110 which in not much of a saving.  They also had a wide selection of plastic kits including many 1/35 military models.

Model Shop Stuttgart

Last month, I visited Schueler's shop in Stuttgart - lots of painted Preiser figures (not cheap even with favourable Euro) - I bought a couple of DCC speakers.  They had the usual range of N & H0, some 0.  Lots of scenic bits & tools.

t'aint necessarily true...

you can buy sound decoders for maybe £65 -  less than the UK.   Just not yesterday in Eindhoven!

I haven't made any comparisons recently, but I used to buy plastruct and similar stuff in the US ears ago - I spent maybe £20 per trip - it was considerably cheaper than here.  Unfortunately, there wasn't much else that is "useful" to a modeller of UK scenes (on the basis that long bits of Basswood & Balsa, glues and paints don't travel well in hand baggage).

The Noch range offers some interesting scenic possibilities including embossed brickwork and cobbles in 7mm - not really investigated yet, and don't know who the UK agents are.

Anyway, it's a nice way of spending half an hour en route for the airport - model shop proprietors seem a pleasant bunch by nature, and it's always interesting to see what's available, even if I have no possible use for an HO scale ICE or a steam-powered DB 2-10-0.

it would be great if we can build up a list of "visited" model shops over Europe.

best

I managed to get to most of the model shops in Vienna last summer when I was on holiday and can pass on what I found - quite a mixture in terms of size/range but also friendliness!.  If anyone's going there soon, feel free to get in touch!

Quite timely, I was hoping to visit next spring and it would be useful to know your findings please.

Last September my mate and I went to Nurnberg and visited

http://www.modellbahnritzer.de/

Great selection of new & s/h, kits, exotics, spares and friendly proprietor - well recommended.

There was another great looking shop in the centre of town we discovered too late on Saturday which looked excellent but can't confirm.

I do remember it was on Farbestrasse (colour street!).

We also took in Munich and visited the shop on the main station, very impressive but no s/h, no reductions.

Cheers,

John E.

For Vienna there is a must shop:

www.memoba.at

Huge selection of European stuff, special runs for them from ACME,LS, Limitbahn etc. and good prices. They are specialists for JZ, BDZ, ZSSK and other eastern European and balkan stuff. Mr. Veith -the owner- is a very helpful person.

Cheers

Andreas

Menzel's Lokschuppen in Düsseldorf:

https://www.menzels-lokschuppen.de

I go there once in a while to stock up on Evergreen, Humbrol and other bits and pieces.

They also have quite a good selection of American locos and freight cars in N and HO.

One of my favorite haunts too, when my wife's visiting family in Remscheid. I used to go for the American stuff but increasingly it's the good selection of French HO that's taking my fancy.

One visit I managed to get to both Menzels and All-American Trains in Kaarst on the same day, using only public transport.

Yesterday I visited this excellent shop in Basel, right in the beautiful historic quarter just off the main square:

Dead easy from our hotel on the outskirts, just took a number 14 tram and got off at Marktplatz, and the shop

was a minute or two away. They had a good test circuit upstairs and the guy couldn't have been more helpful

with giving my loco a run, he even offered to set the DCC address for me.

There are some great shops around, but some don't make it OO easy to find, having little or no web presence.

We all know of the on on Munuchs platform (well near enough to be)

But not many know of the 2 / 3 that are within 5 mins walk of Cologne station, the out of town one in (or out) of Offenburg, the 2 in Trier including the one that's been there at least 45 years.

Then there's the small chains of shops too.

there are some in Germany that are part of the main department stores (I'm sorry I don't remember the name) and are usually on the 2 - 4th floors.

Always worth asking as local too if you get the chance,
