What’s with TPE?

I don’t know if this is 100% correct but I was talking earlier today with a TPE conductor about the Class 68’s and CAF Nova sets.  He told me that they are plagued with issues, mainly the copper wiring corroding.  He went on to say that there are at present two sets laid up with numerous electrical faults.

To further exacerbate the issue, CAF Spain are having a big falling out with CAF UK, basically because the coaches were built in Spain, they won’t tell CAF UK how to fix the problem.  Basically one of them has thrown their teddies out the pram!

There’s huge legal wrangling going on, but before anyone jumps up and says “they should have been built in the UK”, I think this is a one off problem but two divisions of the same company not talking to each other, just beggars belief.

CAF have a pretty dire reputation (not just in U.K.), there have been issues with all of the U.K. fleets. The TPE mk5s do appear to be badly hit though, only 3 sets currently in use daily, mainly on York to Scarborough shuttles.

Apparently the saying cheap as f… is oft quoted

it’s been reported elsewhere that the damages cap has been reached so there is no longer any financial leverage, purely reputational.

Nothing unusual about that, I can think of a couple of suppliers of ours that don't talk to themselves, and then there's the various different entities within the organisation I work for.....:banghead:

Especially if companies have expanded by buying other companies, and the people in the recent acquisition regard the new parent as a bunch of useless incompetents.

Yup, seen that with US, German and Japanese concerns. Usually the end user bypasses the local agency and goes to the OEM to get a better price. The equipment goes wrong and the end user contacts the local guys, who not having got a cut of the sale, aren't interested, and often have no knowledge of exactly what was supplied. Everyone gets upset, and eventually compromises have to be made.....

Most big  multi site / country companies I've worked with / for have been basically a bunch of warring fiefdoms.

Does that explain why a set has been of the TPE Mk 5s has been sat in Holgate sidings, York for a week?

A bit like buying from Hattons as they are ten quid cheaper, and then expecting the local model shop to fix it when it breaks....,

I was led to believe that CAF (UK) was set up, from the ground up to do away with problems like these.  I can’t help but feel that TPE must be metaphorically banging their collective heads against a brick wall in despair.

Not quite correct, four sets in passenger use, and one, sometimes two on training runs. But the last bit, well maybe ................  Kev.
