gazmanjack
Two questions : 1. Should the Hornby Skaledale Cement Hopper be planted over the railway track as the photo on the box shows ?? Or is it used for loading of trucks (road vehicles) besides the cement siding ?? Peaford Yard is a good example of where the hopper is used for the loading of road vehicles. 2. If it is used for the loading of road vehicles, should a cement siding have an array of discharge pipes and pumps situated along the rail siding which feed the hopper ?? Any feedback or perhaps a simple diagram would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Gary.

It's the sort of hopper you would normally see at a batching plant (ready-mix depot), though similar installations might be seen at smaller,or temporary, unloading terminals. Discharge pipes would be flexible pipes, used in conjuction with a compressor, and stored under cover when not in use . If anything were loaded under it, it would be a road tanker. Arthur
Search on the forum for 'Northenden Cement', here's one link; http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/27548-northenden-cement-terminal/ You'll find some info and photos on the former cement terminal at Northenden in west Manchester. Not the same silo type but it'll give you an idea of layout and facilities.
Rivercider
Here is a view of the more modest set up at Barnstaple. the PCAs, from Westbury Cement Works had arrived on the daily trip from Exeter Riverside. All the unloading equipment is on the other side of the track, where there appears to be a discharge pipe lying on the ground. Barnstaple Yard Blue Circle Cement Depot, 31/10/83 cheers
HLT 0109
Presumably, then, it is a different type of hopper that loads the train wagons at the cement production works?
RMweb Gold Mick Bonwick Posted July 28, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 28, 2015 Quite a lot different. The scale of the operation is significantly greater: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/68245-pcas-being-loaded-at-hope-cement-works/
