south_tyne
If you could utilise the 3' board as the scenic section and have a separate traverser/sector plate etc then there would be endless possibilities. One of my favourite designs on Carl's website is Smithfield Street Yard, another one by the legendary Shortliner, which takes up just over 3' including the fiddle yard. It is worth a look, particularly when bearing in mind this was done for long US rolling stock so could be shortened if you are using shorter wheelbase stock. Link should be here: http://www.carendt.com/micro-layout-design-gallery/traversertransfer-table-lines/ Cheers, David Edit - in fact this is broadly the same concept as used by Marc Smith with his wonderful minimum space O gauge Poynton Sneer. You cannot go wrong by taking inspiration from that!
shortliner
If you have XTrkCad here are the details for setrack OO/HO turnouts - enter them and use the HO layout section (XTrkCad is originally a USA program) and print off as required - click to enlarge If you use the 3' board and add a 2-track Fiddlestick [ to replace the "Neck" ] you could build a very good version of the GuiTTar layout in HO/OO [http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/102602-small-space-switching-at-portland/ ] , which should keep you very busily switching for a while
