jrossouw79
Good evening! I am thinking of buying a NCE Powercab DCC system but would like to know which one would be the correct one to buy. The power supply in South Africa are 220-240v so should I go for the UK/EU or US one. I was told that anyone of the two will be able to work over here. Below are the links to the respective products. The US one are a bit cheaper. US version:http://tonystrains.com/product/nce-power-cab-dcc-starter-system/ UK/EU version:http://tonystrains.com/product/nce-power-cab-uk-dcc-starter-system/ Cheers! colin@gorleston
Here in the USA, household supply is 110v. I suppose you could buy the cheaper one from the U.S. But then you would have to source the power supply which would probably negate any savings. Adrian Wintle
The only difference between the two would be the wall-plug transformer. According to the information on the NCE site, the P114 power supply that comes with the US version of the Powercab can handle 220V input. https://ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200917815-P114 Presumably the UK version has a fused plug. Adrian I bought a PowerCab from an official UK dealer and it came with the P114 power supply and a cheap US mains adaptor. The adaptor was very poor quality and I had to move the wall plug around with much sparking noises from the adaptor until the power output was stable for the Powercab supply. I bought a quality UK plug adaptor and have had no problems since. So you might get a 220V power supply but you'll be at the mercy of a US to SA adaptor still. Even with the worry of power adaptors I would suggest you stick with the official P114 power supply and an adaptor since it is an integral part of the Powercab short circuit protection. jrossouw79
Thank you Dave! I will check out the different adaptors that's available at our local travel shop. I actually had confirmation from the retailer (Tony's Trains Exchange) that the P114 should work fine. Cheers! Jacques
Austrag
I have a Power Cab from the USA and a Power Pro setup. I power them, not at the same time, with a 30 amp radio ham power supply giving me a regulated adjustable 0-16 Volts. That way can provide a 12v for normal running and 16v when programming sound. I agree that the R114 is poor and also runs hot. In your climate you need to think about that too, unless you have aircon running.
SRman
The US power adapter is suitable for 110 - 240V AC, so all you need is a suitable international plug adapter.I am using two of the US supplied ones here in Australia (which is also 240V AC). jrossouw79
Thank you SRman!Another confirmation that it will work on our system. Austrag I will consider the heat seeing as our summer are starting now. I only have a 2.4meter bookshelf for a layout so far and will probably only have time to switch a few cars once or twice a week for 15-20mins. So hopefully it won't overheat since my current place don't have aircon. Thanks again for the reply's so far guys! Cheers! Jacques
