RMweb Premium JZ Posted September 19, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 19, 2015 Try as I might, I cannot so much evidence of trackside signage on the S&D. Looking through Ivo Peters' books I can only find signs at stations. I know there were gradient posts, I found the remains of a concrete one close to Tucking Mill viaduct a few years back, but what about others? Speed restriction signs? With this I am aware that it was often part of a driver's route knowledge, but they were brought into more common usage after the Sutton Coldfield accident in 1955. Whistle boards? What style were they? And what about mile posts?
RailWest
Depending upon your definition of 'trackside signage', do not forget also such items as mileage posts and bridge numbers. There a quite a number of surviving bridge number plates, which appear originally to have been rectangular cast-iron, many of them bearing the initials of the L&SWR and McH&H. I wonder if any were ever replaced by the SR cast concrete type? Mileage signs appear to have been oval cast-iron, but certainly on the Bath extension at least many were replaced in BR days by the BR(W) 2-faced wedge type. bike2steam
Try the S&DRT, or Duncan ( blandford1969 ) of this parish, I'm sure they'd be able to help.
