bmthtrains - David
Anyone modelling down under, I'm looking for some recommendations for scenic powders that you've used. I need to get that red soil colour mixed up. To avoid confusion, I'm looking for UK based suppliers. My first port of call was the Green Scene website, as I've used their powders before, but they don't have any images so it's guesswork what they actually look like. This is the area I'm modelling below: Many thanks, David
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted October 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2015 Cannot help with exact colour matches, but the red colour is oxidised iron compounds in the soil; so a blend of colours with a large percentage of rust would set you in the right direction. Ross34
I model the SAR. I've used dried sieved sand stuck down with PVA and painted with emulsion to create the basic reddish / pink dessert hues. Not used any powders as yet - I guess you might want to try mixing white and brown perhaps? What state are you modelling?
JZ
Maybe take a trip to S. Devon, grab a bucketful of soil and bake it in an oven. EDIT: Your nearest place for red soil would be Sidmouth.

RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted October 5, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2015 I used to have a girlfriend who had done a lot of paintings of the desert in Western Australia (her ex-husband had been in the diamond industry). The reds can be even more intense, almost purple, than in your photo.
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted October 5, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 5, 2015 Viewed quite close up, and in the midday sun, the colour can be quite intense!

asmay2002
You might try brick dust as used by Dolls house builders and available in a variety of red shades.
