Hi All,

I haven't posted for what seems like an eternity! Inspired by various cut&shut projects I have started to concoct a 4Bep Buffet car from Bachmann/Your Model Railway MK1's. The underframe and roof are Bachmann and the sides are chopped up from the £8 Mk1.

post-7006-0-86835600-1444068996_thumb.jpg

I have managed to get all the joins bar one at the doors and the various windows were blanked off with 2mm plastic sheet. Gaps have been filled with superglue and smoothed down. I used the Gould book as a guide for the positions of the windows. The Bachmann donor vehicle was a buffet car and the underframe has been stripped down to the trussing only. It is going to run in an unpowered 4Bep based on a reworking of my DC Kits 4Cep. More tomorrow.

Cheers for now, Ian

Looks good.  With any luck, once you've successfully completed this project, Bachmann will announce a 4-BEP variant and save the rest of us the trouble!  :)

Hi All,

Thankyou for the comments and the likes etc; Yesterday and today have seen rapid progress with the coach. Underframe and roof are finished. I reused some of the Bachmann parts and combined them with Southern Pride parts. The roof was done with Comet and DC kits parts. I have primed all the coach components and the results seem to be OK.

I have decided not to use my DC Kits 4Cep as a basis for the unit but utilise Bachmann 4Cep bodies picked up from Invicta. With this in mind I have used glazing from the 4Cep SK to match the finished unit. The unit will be unpowered and use DC Kits Underframes, with detailing bits from Replica and MJT. I have really enjoyed the process of doing this coach, I may try a 4Rep with the leftover buffet coach sides.

Hi Colin.

Thanks for the comment. I have definately got my modelling Mojo back at the moment, I have a half completed Replica 2Hap on the go and have re motored my DC KIts 4Cep. With these and an El Crappo 7mm class 158 I feel I am really enjoying my modelling. I am even going in the loft tomorrow to sort out the various boxes of railway related stuff (junk)!! I will start a topic for the 2Hap if anyone is interested.

Hi All,

I have decided to lump all my EMU projects onto one thread as most of them are now modified RTR items. To start with is my Replica 2Hap. The pictures show the bits needed from the donor BS and them in place on the DMBS. These two vehicles are part of a demonstration I did a couple of years ago, but they show the method quite well. I now use superglue to fill any small gaps.

The DMBS uses the long cab from the Replica MLV. You will need to cut new droplights in one of the brake van doors on each side. This is best done before fitting into place. As you can see if you use the doors as a cutting guide none of the door furniture is lost. The next photos are of the 2Hap itself, firstly the DMBS.

The bauxite paint is a guide for me to see if the joins a acceptable. Next the DTCL.

The DTCL uses the small driving cab from the MLV, all you do is remove the end seating bay from the SO and replace it with the cab unit. This gives you a 2EPB DTS, to turn it into a 2Hap DTCL you need to fill the door lines of the relevant seating bay and enlarge the door window. I have all the parts I need to finish this unit so will keep you up to date with progress. Once you start to gain confidence cutting and shutting the Replica coaches the possibilities are vast.

This is a trial to see if ER EMU's are possible, if I can get hold of some DC Kits ends I may try a 305 or 308. A 307 is a real possibility as is a Bury 504.

This is a 501 driving end which is going to be in test unit 051. Hope these ramblings are of use.

Cheers for now, Ian.

Hi Keith,

That is where I initially got the idea from. The advantage of using the Replica bodies is that I don't have to put on all those hinges!!

Hi All,

A quick update on the 2Hap. Only a small amount of progress due to being in the loft and sorting through all my accumalated bits and pieces. Basically only vents and buffers, I also did the tailing pick up bogie from Replica and DC Kits parts.

post-7006-0-86977400-1444468290_thumb.jpg

While sorting through endless unfinished kits and boxes of parts I found this.

post-7006-0-12072100-1444468304_thumb.jpg

It will save quite a bit of time and matches the level of detail on my completed 2Hap.

I am off to play golf this afternoon, not something I do regularly, taking advantage of the late Lincolnshire sunshine.

Cheers for now, Ian

Hi All,

With the 2Hap in the paintshop, I have completed the interiors. Built from mostly Replica parts the corridor is from an old Coopercraft MK1 kit.

I think I am going to finish it in Green with a small yellow panel. I was toying with the idea of Blue with a small yellow panel but can't find any evidence of this batch appearing in this livery.

The next coupe of photos show the Bachmann/DC Kits 4Bep project.

The CK is already in primer, I will put some photos on later when the sun comes out. I had issues removing the glazing, but have enough left over from the SK to cover it. I put one of the DMBS bodies in the freezer to try and see if it eased removal of the glazing, a tip I got from here, and the glazing came out without any dramas. Again the 4Bep will be Green with a small yellow panel.

Splendid stuff as usual. I am going to dig out the spare EPB bodies I got from Bachmann after they got their numbers wrong and have a go myself...

And your idea of ER EMUs with the big plain windows between the doors makes me wonder if anyone has hacked a VEP into one of the versions without the sliding window frames. I always rather liked the look for them compared to the standard version. A RailAirLink VEG would also be a nice project.

Hi Ian, just out interest, what will you be using to glaze the toilet window on the HAP? I'm toying with making a couple myself from the Replica parts, so would be interested to know. Cheers, Chris

Hi All

Thanks for the comments and likes etc. I did toy with the idea of getting another cheap blue Vep and do the frameless version along with a repaint to Blue/Grey. It wouldn't involve to much to reglaze. The windows I use for the Hap toilet are normal Replica toilet windows. I cut them down to the correct size and in the case of this model the bars and vent were shaved off and smoothed down with a product called Micromesh. This gives a really smooth glass like finish. Next after the Bep will be a 3TC from the £8 MK1 and a Hornby BSK.

Hi All,

The CK is now in primer and windows have been checked for fitting. I had to use some of the windows from the SK body to replace three that I broke removing them. The CK and Buffet match quite well.

I have removed the windows from the DMBS bodies without any problems and they are ready for priming. They still need underframe fittings and wheels, but are not that far off being done. While I am not posting on here I do 7mm models. One of them recently has been this EL Crappo 158 that I am rebuilding for someone.

I tend to get models like this and part built kits with the phrase, "can you just have a look at this for me". Often the kits come without instructions and with bits missing!

The next 4mm project is a 3TC from Your Model Railway and Triang parts, with MJT ends and Replica body inserts.

I've got one of them 158's to build, taken loads of photos when I've been up close to one but still haven't got a clue on some of the underframe bits. As I've taken over that range of kits I need to finish off redoing the masters of the ends so I can make these in resin when I get a chance. What I saw in the box to me didn't look to bad.

Hi Viz post 14 I would say bodies have come out really well ! More strength to the elbow as these units including the 158 all intrerest - I have the El crappo 156 and given the instructions not having any is not that much of a loss ! The box art s however a classic and the disclaimer awesome !

Hi,

Thanks for the comments and the likes. Mike, the castings in the class 158 kit are quite good. This is the second one I have built/rebuilt, this one just reqiures painting. Robert, I have refurbed an El Crappo 156 and again it was quite good. The disclaimer on the box lid is typical of Colin Massingham, I used to talk to him regularly at exhibitions, The hobby is the poorer for his loss. Despite some dodgy kits he was a real pioneer of Diesel and Electric modelling. I also have a 7mm resin boiler for a rebuilt Bulleid pacific that is really good that was his work. Maybe there should be a topic dedicated to Modern Traction Kits. I have got a Cravens parcels unit in 4mm that I may do one day.

I thought the castings for the 158 and 156 (the 156 was under the Model Express banner, I even got some instructions!) were good, do want to make the fronts better , make the glazing sit more flush. When I got the resin moulds, it took me a while to work out that one pair of moulds was the rebuilt WC/BB. Agree there should be a topic for all the people who are or built the MTK kits. I've done the Q1, Q, Ivatt 2-6-2, Class 15, Class 16, Class 17 and Class 22 so far. And part way through the 156.

Keep up the good work anyway

Michael

  • 1 year later...

Hi All,

After finishing the 7mm 101 parcels unit I seem to have my modelling mojo well and truly back. I have gone a long way to finishing the 4Bep and 2Hap. Both units have been painted in Precision EMU green with small yellow panels. The Bep has had its Bachmann glazing refitted and the buffet car just needs final touching up and it will be complete. The Hap will be glazed with Laserglaze which I have not used before so it will be good to see how this turns out. Here are some pics of the progress so far.

Both units are going to be unpowered and will run as part of two unit trains. I am really pleased with the colour of the units, it is a while since I have painted anything green. Transfers will be from Fox and Modelmaster. This afternoon it will be the Bep power car underframes.

Hi ,

Lovely paint job on the stock and suits well and as they say you cannot see the join!

Cheers

Hi Robert,

Thankyou for your comment. A quick update on the units. The underframes for the Bep have been finished and just await painting and I have glazed one side of the Hap with Laserglaze. The Laserglaze is an excellent product and lifts the model no end. As it is sunny in Lincolnshire at the moment I took the chance to get some pictures.

I am off to play football this afternoon (at my age I should know better) so wont be getting a lot more done. I am going to spray the underframes in that lovely gungy electric unit brown that seemed to cover everthing below the solebar.
