Harton and Hopeguard Layout Construction Topic.

Hello,

I have a BLOG of my layout construction but I am finding the BLOG function is very un-user friendly and so have decided to do a layout update forum entry.  Much has already been done but I have had some new ideas and would really value feedback from those who know more about railway modelling than myself!!

Firstly I am thinking that I should add an upper level leading to a large fiddle yard at the end of the layout.  At the moment the layout goes from the terminus station into a 4 road loop section and then into what would be an urban through station but is in-fact a terminus.  Now what I am thinking is that if I elevate two of the tracks leading to this section I will be able to run trains up and over the current end of the line into a large hidden fiddle yard?

Secondly I am thinking of running a small elevated branch (colliery siding from the terminus).  Trouble is I have no idea how to do elevated sections and know that most steam engines struggle with them.  I know I will have to do alot of woodwork and potentially re-do my current urban station but at the moment the layout is lacking in something.

PLEASE HELP!!!

This is what I have thought of today- not doing any inclines, but moving the corner back to where it was originally and then changing the inner section to model a through road station into a fairly tight corner going into the fiddle yard.  The fiddle yard would be hidden under a big hill that would give the scenic section a fell like feel (hopefully).  Just not sure whether to keep the scenic section at 4 or 2 roads as 4 roads gives some storage options, bit also some headaches...

Please let me know what you think?

Purely from a visual standpoint, I'd go with the 4 tracks, as it gives some variation from the mainline at the rear, and, as you stated, offers alternative storage. Of course, difficult operation could spoil the entertainment of an otherwise decent layout, but equally, it could improve the operating experience: it is really for you to weigh up and decide... still love your layout though!!!

I'm no expert, but is it really necessary? I personally love what I see of your layout - I think it looks fantastic, and although I'm still relatively new to modelling (My 'train set' has been knocking about for a while) I'd suggest you keep it as is, and work on finishing your current model to a high standard.

That is a really good point.  There are a few things I have come across as I have developed my layout building skills- such as poor track work equals derailments!  Thats probably the biggest frustration, also I keep reading Hornby magazine and BRM... that gives ideas :)

Have a look at the completely new progress-

I'll describe it from the fiddle yard-

1) Cassette based fiddleyard, concealed by hill and tunnel mouth.  Each cassette holds six coach trains max.

2) junction to branch and main line double track.  Catch point added from branch to protect the double track main line.

3) 30 inch radius single track branch into industrial style branch station

4) double track terminus section (unchanged)

Well some more progress has been made after a few days off!

Please enjoy!  There's still loads to do, but I'm much happier with the progress now.

I really need to build the Peco turntable (and wire it up), finish the other platform and build a grassy bank and build some retaining walls alongside the track to the tunnel.

Then I need to build the tunnel section, the scenic section and... the branch terminus!
